HOUSTON – Four Huskies finished in double-figures and Houston Baptist forced 22 Schreiner turnovers, as the Huskies defeated the Mountaineers, 73-46, Monday evening from Sharp Gym.

Erin McGarrachan led HBU (1-1) with 12 points and 16 rebounds, as she earned her first collegiate double-double. Tayler Jefferson tied a career high with a game-high 16 points, on 5-of-7 shooting and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Shanice Steenholdt scored 12 points and seven rebounds, and Brittany Barton added 10 points. Barton finished the night with seven rebounds, which were one shy of her career high. Ashleigh Nwanguma, who saw her first action after missing all of last season due to injury, scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in nine minutes.

Lanie Alaniz led Schreiner (0-1) with 11 points, while Colby Adolph, Karisa Cantu, and Brooke Sanders each scored six. Adolph grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

HBU came out firing at the start of the game, scoring the first nine points and shutting out Schreiner entering the first media timeout at the 15:40 mark. The timeout helped the Mountaineers, who used an 11-2 run to tie the game at 11-all with 9:14 remaining in the first half.

HBU then went defensive, causing three Mountaineer turnovers in the next four possessions, resulting in seven Husky points, all by Jefferson.

A three-pointer by Rachel Arthur matched the biggest lead for the Huskies in the game, at 11, 26-15, with 5:21 left in the first half.

After two free throws by Cantu to make the score 26-17, Devyn Weymouth battled hard on the ensuing HBU possession, grabbing two offensive rebounds and eventually finding herself at the free throw line. She hit both, giving the Huskies an 11-point lead again, at 28-17.

Schreiner went on a 6-2 run in the final two minutes to cut the deficit to five entering halftime, 30-25.

Jefferson led HBU at the break, with seven points, while Alaniz had six for Schreiner.

HBU started the second half on fire, causing a turnover just 11 seconds in and then going on a 16-0 run in a span of six minutes to lead by 21, 46-25. HBU went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc during that span. A three-pointer by Brooke Sanders at the 12:45-mark stopped the run.

After Sanders' three, HBU went on a 10-0 run to lead the Mountaineers, 56-28. Three pointers by Jefferson and Maisie Elston sandwiched the run.

Schreiner tried to come back, using a 10-0 run itself, culminated by a layup by Adolph with seven minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late. The 18-point deficit was the closest Schreiner came.

A three-pointer by Barton at the 2:28-mark, assisted by Jefferson, was started on a great screen by Ekemini Essien, who allowed Jefferson to find a wide-open Barton.

Schreiner scored the game's final six points in a span of a minute to keep the deficit under 30.

HBU will hit the road for the first time this season, playing a UTEP team that made the NCAA playoffs a season ago. After the game at UTEP on Nov. 16, the Huskies head to Albuquerque to play New Mexico on Nov. 18.
