HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist women's basketball team opens its season-high five-game home stand – which spans the entire month of January – on Tue., Jan. 3, against Sam Houston State. Tip-off is set for a 7 pm start.
HBU leads the all-time series, 3-0, with the most recent victory coming Dec. 11, 2010, where HBU came into Huntsville and defeated the Bearkats, 51-48.
Destini Texada recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Tia Jackson scored 12 and
Brittany Barton added 11. Sequeena Thomas recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for SHSU.
HBU (0-14) shot a season-high 61 points for the second-straight game, but could not overcome a halftime deficit, in a 78-61 loss at UT-Arlington on Dec. 31.
Four Huskies finished in double-figures, led by new career highs by
Brittany Barton (18) and
Tayler Jefferson (10).
Shanice Steenholdt recorded her eighth double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also had four blocks.
Devyn Weymouth also scored 10 points.
Takiyah Langford led UTA with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Bianca Sauls scored 15 and Chauntandra Williams added 12. Sabreena DeNure had six assists.
Steenholdt leads the Huskies on the season with 17.4 ppg and 10.2 rpg. She also leads the team with 24 blocks and 26 steals. Weymouth is second on the team with 6.9 ppg, while Barton is third with 6.1 ppg.
Maisie Elston is tops with 30 assists.
Steenholdt continues to make a name for herself on a national level.
Steenholdt is ranked 61st out of the top 296 student-athletes in all of NCAA Division I in points per game, averaging 17.4. Not only that, but she leads all freshmen in that category.
Shanice is also ranked 18th out of the top 299 Division I student-athletes in rebounds, averaging 10.2 per game. She leads all freshmen in that category.
Steenholdt leads all DI freshmen and is tied for 8th nationally with eight double-doubles this season and is six behind national leader, Sacramento State's Kylie Kuhns, who has 14 double-doubles in 15 games.
The Huskies' 87 percent from the free throw line at UT-Arlington was the highest percentage in one game since the Huskies shot 90 percent at UT-Pan American on Jan. 19, 2009.
Sam Houston State (4-6) lost at Missouri on Dec. 30, 66-48.
Thomas and Chanice Smith each paced SHSU with 12 points apiece. Thomas led the Bearkats with eight rebounds. Britni Martin also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points. SHSU shot just 24 percent from the floor in the game.
BreAnna Brock led Missouri with 16 points and 11 boards, while Christine Flores had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Martin leads SHSU with 14.6 ppg, while Thomas is second with 14.0 ppg and leads the team with 9.1 rpg. Khamra Echols leads SHSU with 35 assists and 24 steals.
