HOUSTON – Houston Baptist begins Great West Conference play hosting NJIT on Thu., Jan. 19 and Chicago State on Sat., Jan. 21. Both games are set for 7 pm tip offs at Sharp Gym.
The Huskies are 1-3 all-time against NJIT and 0-4 against Chicago State, the defending conference champions.
Shanice Steenholdt set new program records in points, field-goals made and rebounds, as the Huskies (1-15) defeated Huston-Tillotson, 87-70, on Jan. 10.
Steenholdt scored 40 points (breaking Jere' Adams' 36-point effort at A&M-International in 2004-05), made 15 field goals (old record of 13 was set by three different players, most recently in 2001-02), and grabbed 22 rebounds (broke the record of 19, set by four different players, with the most recent coming in 2003-04).
Devyn Weymouth nearly became just the second Husky in program history to record a triple-double, as she finished with career bests 11 rebounds and eight assists, while scoring nine points.
Joselyn Pugh returned to the lineup to score 12 points.
Kevia Castillo led HTU with 15 points.
Steenholdt leads the Huskies with 19.3 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 123 field-goals made, 47 percent field-goal percentage and 30 blocks.
Steenholdt continues to make a name for herself on a national level.
Steenholdt is ranked tied for 24th out of the top 300 student-athletes in all of NCAA Division I in points per game, averaging 19.3. Not only that, but she leads all freshmen in that category.
Shanice has cracked the Top 10 nationally in rebounds per game, ranked ninth out of the top 299 student-athletes in NCAA Division I, averaging 11.3 boards a game. She also leads all freshmen in that category.
Steenholdt leads all DI freshmen and is tied for 4th nationally with 10 double-doubles this season and is four behind national leader, Sacramento State's Kylie Kuhns, who has 14 double-doubles. Steenholdt has more double-doubles than Baylor's Brittney Griner, who has nine, and is tied with Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike.
Pugh returned to the lineup in a big way against Huston-Tillotson, scoring a season-high 12 points and missing her career mark by two points. She also pulled down five rebounds and recorded two assists and one steal. Pugh had missed the last seven games due to injury, not playing since at Navy on on Dec. 2.
NJIT (6-11) lost a heartbreaker at Longwood on Jan. 14, by a score of 72-71. The Highlanders have now lost six of their last seven games.
Denisa Domiterova nearly recorded a double-double against the Lancers, scoring a team-high 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. She went 7-of-16 from the floor and hit six 3-pointers, going 6-for-14 from beyond the arc.
Crystal Smith and Erin Neal each had 20-point games for Longwood, scoring 22 and 20, respectively. LeeAnn Sullivan came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds.
Rayven Johnson leads NJIT with 11.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Nicole Maticka (50) and Uju Nwankwo (30) have 80 of the team's 94 blocks.
Chicago State (2-15) lost at Seattle, 80-36, on Jan. 14. Janay Dockery led the Cougars with 10 points, while Caneka Davis led the team with seven rebounds while also scoring nine points.
Four Redhawks finished in double-figures, led by Elle Kerfoot with 18 points. Kacie Sowell finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Talisa Rhea also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
For CSU, Dockery leads the team with 17.3 ppg. She is second in the conference in scoring, behind Steenholdt. Dockery also leads the Cougars with 5.1 rebounds a game. She is also tied for the team lead with 15 blocks and leads with 52 steals
