HOUSTON – Just a couple of hours after being named Great West Conference Player of the Week,
Shanice Steenholdt set new program records with 40 points and 22 rebounds in Houston Baptist's 87-70 victory over Huston-Tillotson Tuesday evening from Sharp Gym.
Steenholdt's 40 points broke a six-year record in the 12-year history of the program, as the previous program record was 36, set by Jere Adams at Texas A&M-International in the 2005-06 season. She also set a new program record for most field-goals made (15), setting the old record of 13, set by three different players with the most recent coming in the 2001-02 campaign. Four different players had grabbed a program-best 19 rebounds – the most recent coming in the 2003-04 season – but Steenholdt broke that record by three rebounds. Steenholdt also made 10-of-13 free throws and recorded one assist, two blocks and two steals in just 27 minutes of action.
Joselyn Pugh's return to the lineup after missing the last seven games due to injury resulted in a season-high 12 points, while she also grabbed five boards and had two assists and one steal.
Devyn Weymouth narrowly missed becoming just the second Husky in program history to record a triple-double, as she set new personal bests with 11 rebounds and eight assists, while also scoring nine points.
Huston-Tillotson (4-9) had four players finish in double figures, led by Kevia Castillo with 15 points, followed by Erica Cray with 13, Kevetta Williams with 12 and Kandice Smith with 10. Felicia Gains led the Lady Rams with seven rebounds, as she scored nine points.
After each team traded baskets to start the game, HBU went on a 15-0 run to lead 17-2 with 15:29 remaining in the half. The Huskies shot 88 percent in the first four minutes of play, hitting 7-of-8 shots. HTU scored the next five points to trail by 10, 17-7, but
Tayler Jefferson's three put the Huskies back up by 13, with 13:44 remaining.
Castillo went down the court and nailed a three, as the teams traded baskets for the next three minutes, with the Huskies leading by no more than 10 and no fewer than eight. A layup by Jasmine Dukes at the 8:34-mark cut the Husky lead to six, 24-18, before Steenholdt took over, scoring the next five points for the Huskies, on a three-point play and two free throws. The Huskies continued to roll, as Weymouth hit a free throw, Jefferson stole the ball in the next Lady Ram possession, which resulted in a free throw by Pugh. A layup by Steenholdt gave HBU a 17-point lead, 35-18, with 6:25 left in the opening half.
Down by 16 with three minutes remaining, HTU put on the full-court press, which resulted in five quick points and two Husky turnovers, forcing HBU to take a timeout, leading the Lady Rams 42-31.
A Jenkins jumper gave the Huskies a 13-point lead, but HTU scored the half's final point, a free throw by Williams, as the teams entered halftime with HBU leading 44-32.
Steenholdt already had a double-double at halftime, with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Pugh had nine points. Williams and Castillo led the Lady Rams with nine points apiece.
HBU started the second half hot yet again, starting the first four minutes on an 11-2 run to lead the Lady Rams 55-34. A pair of free throws by Dukes slowed down the run, but the Huskies continued, getting a jumper by Jefferson, a layup by Pugh and a layup by Steenholdt, as the Huskies pushed the lead to 23-, 61-38, with 14:49 remaining in the game.
The Huskies led by as many as 25 before a Williams three halted the run, as HBU led 65-43 with 12:23 left.
HTU used a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 16, 69-53, with eight and a half left in the second half. Thirty-six second after the Lady Rams cut the deficit to 16,
Maisie Elston hit a three-pointer to give the Huskies a 72-53 advantage.
HBU increased its lead to 21 with just under three minutes remaining in the game, but HTU closed out the game outscoring the Huskies 8-5 to end the game losing by 17, 87-70.
HBU (1-15) will have nine days to prepare for Great West Conference play, as the Huskies host NJIT on Thu., Jan. 19 at 7 pm.
