ERIE, Colo. – Houston Baptist University shot its best round of the tournament with a 296 to finish in 12th place with a 54-hole total of 891, the lowest total since the program was reinstated six years ago, at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite Tuesday at the 7,742-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club.
Freshman
Jeffrey Merrell fired a 1-under par 71 to tie for 32nd with a 54-hole total of 220 to lead the Huskies, while fellow freshman
Andy Ariens finished just one stroke behind to tie for 36th. Junior
Hudson Hansard carded his second-straight 74 to tie for 57th at 226. Freshman
Brandon Wilhide shot a 77 to tie for 62nd at 228, while freshman
Preston Stanley posted a 74 to tie for 76th at 232.
Host Colorado won the team title with a 54-hole total of 840, five strokes ahead of New Mexico and 16 ahead of Oklahoma. The Huskies finished ahead of Texas-El Paso, Utah and Northern Colorado. Colorado's Beau Schoolcraft, who was competing individually, and San Diego's Alex Ching tied for the individual title at 11-under par 205, two strokes ahead of New Mexico's John Catlin.
The Huskies return to action at the UTA Fall Classic at Waterchase Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, Sept. 19-20.
