Men’s Golf Tied for 12th at Mark Simpson Colorado Invite

ERIE, Colo. – Houston Baptist University started four freshmen and shot 297 then followed with a 298 to stand tied for 12th place after the opening day of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite Monday at the 7,742-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club.

Freshman Andy Ariens fired a 3-under par 69 in his first collegiate round, then followed with a 74 and is tied for 15th with a score of 143 to lead the Huskies. Freshman Jeffrey Merrell carded rounds of 74 and 75 and is tied for 48th at 149. Freshman Brandon Wilhide shot 76 and 75 and is tied for 51st at 151, while junior Hudson Hansard is tied for 55th at 152 with scores of 78 and 74. Freshman Preston Stanley is tied for 80th, opening with an 82, then rebounding with a 76 in the afternoon.

Host Colorado leads the tournament with a score of 580 with rounds of 282 and 278, while San Diego trails by seven strokes. New Mexico and Oklahoma are tied for third at 588. Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Nevada, Kansas and Air Force round out the top 10. Gonzaga leads HBU and Texas-El Paso by eight stokes, while the Huskies are ahead of Northern Colorado and Utah.

Colorado's Beau Schoolcraft leads the tournament at 12-under 132 by firing back-to-back rounds of 132, but is playing individually. San Diego's Alex Ching is three strokes back at 135 with scores of 69 and 66, while Colorado's Derek Fribbs is in third at 136, shooting 71 and 65.

The tournament concludes with the final round Tuesday.
