LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore
Stephanie Castellon set a new program record with 18 saves made, but Houston Baptist was shut out in its second-straight match, 2-0, at New Mexico State Sunday afternoon.
"The score of the New Mexico State match did not reflect how hard our team battled," said Castellon. "I am really proud of my team and my performance today."
Molly Missimer led HBU with two shots, both on goal.
Lindsay Matlock had the Huskies' other shot on goal and
Brandi Hart had one shot.
Castellon made 18 saves in the match, including 12 in a busy second half, while playing all 90 minutes. Her 18 saves surpass the previous single-match record of 15, set by Randi Derringer at Texas State on Sept. 28, 2008.
Mary Kate Kaziol led the Aggies with a goal and an assist. Courtney Irwin scored a goal and Cassandra Branch recorded an assist. Yolanda McMillion recorded a match-high five shots and four shots on goal.
Erin Wosick played all 90 minutes for NMSU, making three saves.
The two teams entered halftime deadlocked at zero. NMSU outshot the Huskies in the first half, 11-3, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
In the 58
th minute, NMSU ended the tie as Kaziol scored, assisted by Branch. Branch passed the ball to Kaziol, who found herself just five yards out in front of Castellon.
The match remained 1-0 until the 81
st minute, when the Aggies were awarded a corner kick. Kaziol took the kick and sent the ball in front of the net, where Irwin headed it into the net.
HBU did not have a corner kick in the match, while NMSU had seven.
HBU (1-3) will return home to face Lamar on Sept. 2 at 7 pm and Northwestern State on Sept. 4 at 1 pm.
