Shelby Horn tied a career high with 11 saves, but it wasn't enough as Houston Baptist lost to UTEP, 4-0, Friday evening at University Field.
"The girls fought very hard tonight," said head coach
Misty Jones. "I do not feel that the score reflects how we played. UTEP is a very good team that put away their chances.
"We will learn from the loss and correct our mistakes in preparation for Sunday's match against New Mexico State. We are improving every day and that's what is important."
HBU was held to just four shots and two on goal.
Molly Missimer led the Huskies with two shots, and one on goal.
Lindsey Braddick came off the bench to record the other shot on goal, while
Brandi Hart had one shot.
Horn allowed four goals while making 11 saves, evening her season record to 1-1-0. The Huskies were outshot in the match, 29-4, including 15-2 in shots on goal.
Amanda Pak led the Miners with five shots, four on goal, and two goals. Jasmine Schulz had three shots, all on goal.
Sarah Dilling started the match and earned the victory, making two saves in 59:40. Chandra Morden played the final 30:20.
There was no scoring until the 29
th minute of the first half, when Brittany Kindzierski's shot was blocked, but Pak got the rebound and scored.
One minute later, UTEP was awarded a penalty kick, which resulted in a 2-0 Miner lead, as Lauren Katada was successful. That was all the scoring in the first half, as UTEP outshot HBU, 14-3. Horn made five saves in the half.
The Miners were awarded a corner kick at 54:53. The third shot in that ensuing drive resulted in the Miners' third goal of the match and Pak's second, assisted by Jade Babcock.
UTEP completed the scoring in the 86
th minute, as Gina Soto scored, unassisted.
HBU (1-2-0) will look to even its west coast trip when the Huskies play New Mexico State on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 2 pm CST.
