NEWARK, N.J. – Houston Baptist pummeled New Jersey Institute of Technology, 11-0 in the first game, but suffered a defensive lapse and couldn't come up with a clutch hit in a 3-1 loss in the second game of a Great West Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
In the first game, HBU junior righthander Dalton Schafer tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout, and the Huskies pounded out 15 hits, with each starter recording a hit and all but one reaching base multiple times.
Sophomore centerfielder Jake Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a runs scored, while junior second baseman David Pfuntner went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs for the Huskies (9-27, 7-3 GWC). Junior shortstop Collin Hetzler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, junior designated hitter Robbie Buller went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and senior first baseman Beau Warren went 2-for-3 with a run. Junior leftfielder Luke Clements drove in two runs, and junior catcher Asai Adame scored two runs.
Schafer (2-8) threw only 72 pitches, struck out three and walked only one and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before D.J. Roche's bloop single to right with one out broke it up. Jeff Peterson followed with a single to left-center to put runners on the corners, but Schafer got Bryan Bleakley to ground into a double play to end the game.
Roche took the loss allowing eight runs, but only one earned, on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking five in 4.2 innings for the Highlanders (10-22, 3-7).
HBU broke a scoreless tie by erupting for nine runs in the fifth inning as Pfuntner drew a leadoff walk, Hetzler laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the second baseman dropped the throw allowing Pfuntner to go to third. After Hetzler stole second, Buller lifted a sacrfice fly to right for the first run of the game. Gonzalez drove an RBI double into the rightfield corner, then Warren and Arnst drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. After Kalina struck out for the second out, Clements delivered a two-run single up the middle and Adame walked to reload the bases to give HBU a 4-0 lead.
Pfuntner chopped a grounder through the hole on the left side to plate two more, Hetzler had an RBI single to right, but the rightfielder misplayed the ball allowing Pfunter to come home. Buller then ripped an RBI double down the leftfield line to cap the inning. Eight of the Huskies' nine runs were unearned and seven came with two outs.
The Huskies added more in the seventh on consecutive singles by Adame, Pfuntner and Hetzler, the last of which drove in a run. Gonzalez singled up the middle to bring home Pfuntner to push the lead to 11-0.
In the second game, HBU senior lefthander Jamie Storey dominated NJIT, but the Huskies committed three critical errors and left nine runners on base in a frustrating loss.
Pfuntner went 2-for-5 with a double, while Hetzler, Gonzalez and Clements recorded singles for the only other Husky hits of the game. Matt Tomczyk had the only two hits of the game for the Highlanders, while scoring a run and driving in a run.
Storey (0-6) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on two hits, striking out four, walking two and hitting a batter in eight innings. Mark Leiter went the distance for NJIT, throwing 143 pitches and giving up one run on five hits, striking out seven, walking six and hitting one in nine innings.
NJIT got on the board first with an unearned run in the third. Anthony Caiola reached on an error by Kalina to lead off the inning, John Bouck walked, and Vincent Del Vecchio moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Tomczyk followed with an RBI single to left as the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead.
Gonzalez tied the game in the top of the eighth, blasting a solo home run, his second of the season, to left to make the score 1-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, however, Tyler Kapp led off with a walk and Bouck sacrificed him over to second with a bunt. Del Vecchio reached on a fielder's choice as Kapp was thrown out trying to advance to third on a ground ball, and Tomczyk reached on an infield single deep in the hole at short. Teddy Bickert then hit a ground ball to short, which should have ended the inning, but Hetzler bobbled it, rushed the throw and threw wide at second allowing Del Vecchio to score the go-ahead run and putting runners on the corners. The Highlanders then executed a double steal for an insurance run.
The series continues with another doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at noon CDT. Inclement weather is expected tomorrow, so visit HBUHuskies.com for any changes to the schedule.
