HOUSTON – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi received a pair of solid starts from Ian Campbell and Roy Ferding to lead the Islanders to a sweep of Houston Baptist, 8-3 in game one and 13-3 in game two, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
In the first game, sophomore leftfielder Jake Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while senior first baseman Beau Warren went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for the Huskies (0-9).
Trey Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs, while Jeramie Marek went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Islanders (8-2). Chris Vergne also scored a pair of runs for TAMU-CC.
Campbell (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five in five innings for the Islanders, while junior Dalton Schafer (0-3) allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits in five innings.
Matt Holland tripled to lead off the second and scored on a groundout, but HBU answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Gonzalez led off with a double and scored on Warren's single up the middle. The Islanders went ahead to stay on Hernandez's three-run blast to left in the third. The Islanders score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and added two runs in the sixth, but the Huskies were only able to come back with single runs each inning.
In the second game, HBU committed five errors, which led to five unearned runs.
HBU junior leftfielder David Pfuntner and junior shortstop Ryan Bacak each had a pair of singles, and Gonzalez had his third double of the afternoon and an RBI.
Holland, Jacob Perales and Vergne each had two hits as TAMU-CC had 10 hits for the game – all singles. Perales scored three runs and drove in two, while Drew Vest, Hernandez and Holland scored a pair. Holland, Vergne and Omar Sciantarelli each drove in two.
Ferdin (2-0) gave up one run on five hits in five innings for the win, while HBU sophomore Tyler McCarty gave up eight runs, five earned, on six hits in five innings.
The Islanders scored five runs in the top of the first after a one-out error opened the door. TAMU-CC didn't let up, scoring five more over the last three innings.
HBU returns to action when it travels to face McNeese State Friday through Sunday in Lake Charles, La.
