SUGAR LAND, Texas – Freshman Kendall Stiefel made her collegiate debut in the circle and struck out 12 batters, but Army scored the only run of the game to win, 1-0, Sunday morning at Fort Bend Baptist High School in Sugar Land.

The Huskies had an opportunity to score the game's first run, in the bottom of the second, as Callie Herrington started the inning with a bullet down the left-field line. She tried to turn a triple into an inside-the-park home run but was gunned down at the plate.

There was no scoring until the top of the sixth, when the first Black Knight hit of the game dropped in for an infield single, off the bat of pinch hitter Dana VanderLey. After a fly ball out, Alex Reynolds walked, as the Black Knights had runners on first and second with two outs. The very next batter, Amanda Ortenzo singled up the middle to bring home VanderLey. Reanna Johnson popped up to the shortstop to end the threat.

Herrington and Mollye Mlcak had the only hits of the game for the Huskies, as Mlcak had a double up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Mlcak nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as she hit one to the warning track in center field.

VanderLey and Ortenzo had the only hits for the Black Knights, as Ortenzo had the only RBI.

Stiefel struck out 12 batters in seven innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and four walks. Haley Pypes earned her second-straight victory, as she pitched all seven innings, allowing two hits and five walks while striking out three.

HBU (1-2) will hit the road for the first time in 2011, as the Huskies face Sam Houston State in doubleheader action, on Feb. 16 with game one scheduled for a 2 pm start.
