HBU Hosts Conference-Leading Chicago State Thursday

HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team begins a two-game home stand Thursday night against Great West Conference-leading Chicago State. Tip-off is set for a 5:15 pm start on Pack the House Night at Sharp Gym.

Chicago State leads the all-time series, 3-0, as the Cougars won both meetings last season and defeated the Huskies, 94-62, on Jan. 13 in Chicago. Destini Texada led the Huskies in points (16) and rebounds (8), while Megan Green scored 10 points. Green (4) and Tia Jackson (5) had nine of the team's 12 assists. Four Cougars ended the game in double-figures, led by Courtney Waldon with 23 points. Tressa Beckel had 20 points, while Janay Dockery and Natalie Marlowe scored 16 and 10 points, respectively.

HBU and Chicago State have played three common opponents: Central Arkansas, UT-Pan American and NJIT. HBU is 0-3 and Chicago State is 3-0. HBU had two losses on the road and one on a neutral site while the Cougars defeated UTPA and NJIT at home and defeated the Sugar Bears in Arkansas. Chicago State lost to visiting Auburn by just four points, 67-63, on Dec. 21. The Tigers are currently 13-8 and 6-2 in the SEC, tied for second in the conference.

HBU (2-18, 0-5 GWC) concluded its Dakota road trip last weekend, losing at North Dakota, 104-54, on Jan. 29.

Jamie Spriggs came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting against UND. Destini Texada scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Joselyn Pugh had four points, six rebounds, two assists and a team-high two steals. Mallory Youngblut scored a game-high 24 points but Corey Lof had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Sioux. Nicole Smart had a game-high five steals as the Sioux finished with 19 steals.

HBU is seventh in the conference in scoring offense (51.9 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (78.1 ppg). The Huskies are fourth in the league in rebounding offense (35.9 rpg) and sixth in rebounding defense (42.8 rpg).

Texada ranks eighth in the conference in scoring, averaging 12.8 ppg. Spriggs is 15th averaging 9.3 ppg.
Texada is tied for second in the conference in rebounding, averaging 8.3 rpg and is third in field-goal percentage, shooting 53 percent from the floor.

Tia Jackson is ranked sixth in assists, dishing out an average 3.6 per game and is 10th in steals, averaging 1.4 per game.

Chicago State (14-8, 5-0 GWC) won its eighth-straight game, defeating Seattle University, 74-62, on Jan. 29 in Seattle.

Four Cougars finished in double figures against the Redhawks. Waldon scored a team-high 19 points and Dockery had 16. Beckel scored 14 and Caila Desroches scored 12 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Seattle's Elle Kerfoot led all scorers with 20 points.

Chicago State is tops in the conference in nine categories, including scoring offense (72.0 ppg), field-goal percentage (42 percent), rebounding offense (40.1 rpg) and steals (12.5 spg). The Cougars are ranked second in scoring defense, allowing 62.0 points per game, and is second in rebounding defense, averaging 36.0 boards a game.

Beckel leads the Great West Conference in scoring, averaging 18.4 ppg. Waldon is third averaging 16.6 ppg and Dockery is 10th with 12.6 ppg.

Beckel is second in the league in rebounding, averaging 8.3 rpg. Elana Wroten is fifth with 7.4 rpg.

Marlowe and Dockery are tied for third in assists, averaging 3.9 per game. Three Cougars grace the top of the conference in steals, as Beckel is first (2.4 spg), Dockery is second (2.3 spg) and Waldon is third (2.2 spg).

Dockery is ranked first in the conference in three-point percentage, shooting 47 percent. Beckel is third in the league in blocked shots, averaging 1.7 per game.
