First-ever meeting against Bobcats; third meeting against Mavericks

HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist women's basketball team makes one final road trip to conclude the 2011 portion of the schedule, facing Texas State in San Marcos on Dec. 28, then concluding the trip at Univ. of Texas-Arlington on Dec. 31.

This will mark the first-ever meeting against the Bobcats, while this will be the third-ever meeting against UTA, with the Mavericks leading the series, 2-0. The first meeting between the two teams was in Arlington on Jan. 3, 2009, with UTA defeating HBU, 66-57. The next season, the Mavericks made the trek to Houston and defeated the Huskies, 77-65, on Dec. 30, 2009.

HBU (0-12) was nearly even with Lamar in rebounds and shooting percentage, but the Huskies converted a season-high 30 turnovers, which resulted in 30 Cardinals points, in a 73-40 loss to visiting Lamar on Dec. 20.

Shanice Steenholdt led all players with 24 points and 14 rebounds - six points and one rebound shy of her career highs. Brittany Barton scored seven points and grabbed three boards, while Emily Jenkins came off the bench to grab six rebounds and block three shots.

Lamar had four players in double-figures, led by Taylor Hays with 14 points, followed by Kalis Loyd with 13, Monique Whittaker with 12 and Shauna Long with 10. Loyd had six rebounds, five assists, one block and three steals.

Steenholdt leads the Huskies with 16.7 ppg and 10.0 rpg. She also leads the Huskies with 16 blocks and is second with 21 steals. Tayler Jefferson leads the team with 22 steals.

HBU's upcoming game at UT-Arlington on Dec. 31 is the first time the Huskies have ever played on New Year's Eve. The Huskies have played on Dec. 30th six times in the program's 12-year history.

After starting the season 3-3, Texas State (6-4) has now won three of its last four contests. The latest victory came in Nashville against Belmont on Dec. 21, 71-66.

Against the Bears, four Bobcats finished in double-figures, led by Ashley Ezeh with 17 points, followed by Diamond Ford and Demi Clinch with 14 each, and Kaylan Martin with 11. Texas State finished with 42 rebounds, led by Ezeh's seven.

Belmont's Haley Nelson scored a game-high 19 points and also grabbed a game-high nine boards. Katie Brooks had eight assists, more than half of the team's 15.

Ford leads the team with 19.1 ppg, while Ezeh is tops with 9.0 rpg.

UT-Arlington's (1-7) lone win this season came at home against McMurry on Nov. 23, 52-41. The Mavericks play at UT-Pan American on Dec. 28 before playing the Huskies.

UTA's latest setback was versus Western Michigan, 67-63, on Dec. 19 to conclude the Beach Classic. Malaika Green led UTA with 14 points, while Bianca Sauls nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sabreena DeNure had five points, four rebounds and six assists.

WMU's Jazmine Windham led all scorers with 18 points. Corie Buchanan had nine points, eight rebounds and nine assists.

UTA is led in scoring by Chauntandra Williams with 7.4 ppg, while Sauls is averaging 6.4 ppg and leads the Mavericks with 4.6 rpg.
