HOUSTON – Houston Baptist ran into yet another hot-shooting team, this time the New Mexico Lobos, as UNM defeated the Huskies, 65-38, Sunday afternoon from Sharp Gym.

New Mexico shot 57 percent from the floor in the game, compared to the Huskies' 30 percent. HBU shot 36 percent in the first half and 24 percent in the second.

HBU (0-11) was led by Shanice Steenholdt, with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Brittany Barton scored the second-most points in a game this season, dropping eight. Olivia Madison scored a career-high six points, going 2-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Tayler Jefferson scored two points and dished out a team-high three assists.

Three Lobos (4-7) finished in double figures, led by Caroline Durbin with 17 points. Lauren Taylor scored 15 and Porche Torrance added 12. Torrance tied Jourdan Erskine for the team high in rebounds, grabbing eight each. Erskine finished with nine points.

New Mexico started the game on fire, jumping out to a 13-point lead in the first six minutes of the game, 15-2. The Lobos missed just one shot in that span, coming on their very first shot attempt of the game. A Maisie Elston jumper at the 13:26-mark stopped the bleeding, but was answered 18 seconds later by a jumper by Maddie Mauraida.

The Huskies cut the deficit to eight on a jumper by Barton, a Lobo turnover, then a three-pointer by Barton, as the Huskies trailed New Mexico, 17-9, with 12:12 left in the opening half.

HBU continued to battle, cutting the deficit to as low as four, 23-19, with 5:58 left in the half, culminated by a Madison three, prompting New Mexico to take a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Lobos' Durbin nailed a three, only to be answered by a Madison long ball. The Lobos hit their third and final three-pointer at the 2:54-mark to give them a nine-point lead, but Emily Jenkins hit a jumper to end the scoring of the half, with the Huskies trailing New Mexico, 31-24.

Steenholdt and Madison tied for the team high with six points apiece at the half, while Steenholdt had a team-high four rebounds. Durbin led all scorers at the break with 11 points, while Torrance and Ashley Rhoades each had four boards for the Lobos.

The Huskies scored the second half's opening basket – a layup by Devyn Weymouth – that made the score 31-26, but New Mexico went on a 23-1 run to lead the Huskies, 54-27, midway through the second half.

Two consecutive baskets by the Huskies stopped the run, as they trailed 54-31. Another layup by Steenholdt at the 6:50-mark cut the deficit to 23, but that was all the closer the Huskies would get, as the Lobos led by as many as 29.

HBU will host Lamar on Tue., Dec. 20 at 6 pm in the final game before the Christmas break. After Christmas, the Huskies hit the road against Texas State (12/28) and UT-Arlington (12/31).
