HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist women's basketball team welcomes the University of New Mexico to Sharp Gym on Sun., Dec. 18, in the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Lobos. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
HBU (0-10) scored a season-high 60 points on a season-high 48 percent shooting, but lost at Houston, 83-60, on Dec. 10 at UH's Hofheinz Pavilion. The Huskies shot 43 percent in the first half and 56 percent in the second.
Shanice Steenholdt recorded game highs of 30 points and 11 rebounds. The 30 points were the most scored by a Husky in four seasons and the first time in the 12-year history of the program against an NCAA Division I opponent.
Maisie Elston scored a career-high nine points and dished out a personal best seven assists. She also had four rebounds, one block and one steal.
Tayler Jefferson scored eight points and tied a career high with four steals.
Amanda Lawson led UH with 24 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Roxanna Button scored 22, while Terran Alford scored 14 and Michelle White added 10.
Steenholdt continues to make a name for herself on a national level.
Steenholdt leads all DI freshmen and is tied for 8th nationally with five double-doubles this season and is four behind national leader, Sacramento State's Kylie Kuhns, who has nine.
Steenholdt is ranked tied for 99th out of the top 300 student-athletes in all of NCAA Division I in points per game, averaging 16.5. Not only that, but she is only the third freshman to reach that high in the national rankings, with Wright State's Kim Demmings (16.8) and Detroit's Shareta Brown (16.7) as the only freshmen to be ahead of Steenholdt.
Shanice is also ranked tied for 44th out of the top 300 student-athletes in DI in rebounds a game, averaging 9.7. She leads all freshmen in that category.
Jefferson is on a four-game streak where she has recorded at least two assists and one steal a game. She tied her career high of three assists at the beginning of the streak, against Stephen F. Austin (11/29) and tied her career mark of four steals at Houston (12/10). In the last four games, Jefferson has nine assists and 11 steals. On the season, she is second on the team with 15 assists and leads the squad with 20 steals.
New Mexico (3-7) closed out an eight-game home stand losing four of its final five games, the last one coming against Northern Colorado on Dec. 15, 61-54.
Three Lobos finished in double-figures in that game, led by Jourdan Erskine with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Taylor scored 12 and Caroline Durbin chipped in with 10. Porche Torrance tied the game high with four blocks.
Kaisha Brown scored a game-high 22 points for the Bears, while Kim Lockridge had a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards.
On the season, Durbin leads UNM with 14.6 ppg. Torrance almost averages a double-double with 10.6 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
