HOUSTON – Houston Baptist had a better shooting percentage than visiting Stephen F. Austin and scored more points in the paint, but the Ladyjacks hit 11 three-pointers to give SFA a 53-39 victory Tuesday evening at Sharp Gym.
Shanice Steenholdt recorded her third double-double in the last four games for HBU (0-7), tying the game high with 12 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. She also set a new career high with three blocks.
Joselyn Pugh finished second with eight points and five rebounds.
Tayler Jefferson scored five points and had a game-high three steals.
Tierany Henderson led SFA (6-0) with 12 points, while Brittney Matthew finished with 11. Tammara Marion finished with nine points, coming on three 3-pointers. Porsha Roberts led the Ladyjacks on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.
SFA scored the game's first six points, on a three by Marion, a jumper by Roberts and a free throw by Amina Sawyer. The Huskies then scored the next four points to trail by just two, 6-4, on baskets by Pugh and Steenholdt.
Weymouth picked up two fouls in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game, prompting the Huskies to bench her. The Ladyjacks increased their lead back to six before the Huskies scored three straight on a free throw by
Brittany Barton followed by a layup by
Emily Jenkins, as SFA led 12-9 with 10:07 remaining in the opening half.
Following a Courtney Conwright trey, the Huskies brought the deficit down to two once again on jumpers by Weymouth and Steenholdt, as the Huskies trailed SFA, 15-13, with 7:48 remaining.
SFA used a 14-5 run to lead the Huskies by 11, the most of the half, at 29-18, with 1:33 left in the first half. The Ladyjacks hit four 3-pointers by three different players in that run.
The Huskies made a furious comeback in the final 90 seconds, as Pugh hit a jumper,
Maisie Elston hit two free throws and Steenholdt hit a jumper with 15 seconds left, as the Huskies brought the deficit down to five, 29-24, at halftime.
Steenholdt scored nine of her 12 points in the first half, as she also led all players with nine rebounds. Pugh had a six-point, four-rebound first half. Marion and Henderson led SFA with six points apiece – hitting two 3-pointers each – as the Ladyjacks made six 3-pointers in the half.
The second half started with a jumper by Pugh, but the Ladyjacks immediately brought the lead back to six, with a three-pointer by Henderson. The next Husky possession resulted in a steal and a jumper by Brittney Matthew, to give the visitors a 34-26 lead with 13:27 left in the second half.
SFA continued to roll, scoring the next eight points – a 13-2 run to start the half – to lead by its largest margin of the night, 42-26, with 10:38 remaining in the second half. In that run, SFA hit three 3-pointers in that run.
The Huskies broke the run with a long ball from Elston at the 9:47-mark of the second half, as SFA led 42-29, only to be answered by a three by Matthew the very next SFA possession.
After a jumper by Steenholdt brought the Huskies to within 13, 47-34, SFA used a 6-2 run for its largest margin of the night, 53-35, with 3:31 left in the second half.
Neither team could score for nearly 90 minutes, when Weymouth made a layup to bring the Huskies to within 15, 53-38. Steenholdt completed the scoring of the night as she was fouled and made one of two free throws with 23 seconds left in the game.
HBU will hit the road to compete in the Navy Classic from Dec. 2-3. The Huskies face the host Midshipmen on the 2nd and George Washington on the 3rd. Both games are scheduled for 5 pm central time starts.
