HOUSTON – After playing their first four games away from home, the Houston Baptist women's basketball team finally return home to the friendly confines of Sharp Gym, as the Huskies host the third-annual Husky Classic this Fri. and Sat., Nov. 25-26.
HBU's (0-4) latest setback came at UTEP on Nov. 19, as
Shanice Steenholdt earned her first double-double in her collegiate career, tying the game-high mark of 18 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, but the Huskies lost to the Miners, 82-53. The Huskies went on a 14-0 run to end the game.
Devyn Weymouth scored a career-high 16 points, going 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had two assists.
Jenzel Nash came off the bench to score 18 points for the Miners, shooting 50 percent from the floor (8-of-16). Kayla Thornton recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Erika Warren grabbed nine boards and also recorded one block and two steals.
In only four games this season, HBU has already set some records. Junior guard
Brittany Barton has already set new personal bests in points and rebounds, scoring 15 points at UMKC and grabbing six boards at Rice.
Freshman forward Steenholdt scored the most single-game points by a freshman since the Huskies' transition back to NCAA Division I in 2007-08. Her 21 points at Rice squeaked by the previous best of 20 set by Jamie Spriggs at South Dakota on Feb. 16, 2009.
HBU has 30 steals in its first four games, well above what the Huskies had in their first four games last season (18).
Vermont (4-1) lost its first game of the season against visiting Dartmouth, 72-62, on Nov. 22.
Lauren Buschmann paced Vermont with 28 points and also led with 11 rebounds. She blocked one shot and had four steals. Sam Simononis and Lauren Wheeler scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Faziah Steen had a career night for Dartmouth, scoring 32 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, recording three assists and five steals for the Big Green. Sasha Dosenko scored 12 points and had three blocks.
Buschmann leads Vermont on the season with 16.0 ppg and is tied for the team lead of 7.6 rpg with Shanai Heber. The Catamounts have 52 steals in five games, with Simononis and Heber having 11 apiece.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-3) won its first game of the season against visiting Iona, 77-68, on Nov. 22.
Damequia Montgomery recorded a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Islanders, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the line. Jessica Jammer also had a double-double night, scoring 17 and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Myeisha Myles scored 10 points. Alisa Roberts came off the bench to score nine points and grab five rebounds.
Damika Martinez scored a game-high 21 points for the Gaels. Kristina Ford almost recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine boards. Iona had six players with four fouls.
Jammer leads the Islanders on the season with an average of 14.0 ppg, followed closely by Myles, with 13.2 ppg. Montgomery is tops on the glass, averaging 8.0 rpg, while Myles is averaging 7.8 rpg. Verne'Qua Taylor leads the team in both assists (12) and steals (4).
Texas Southern (0-2) lost to visiting Air Force, 64-54, on Sat., Nov. 19.
Kiara Taylor and Kayla West finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tigers. Gianne Fleming grabbed a game-high five rebounds while also scoring eight points. She also had four assists, one block and one steal.
Alicia Leipprandt (20) and Dymond James (17) scored 37 of Air Force's 64 points. The duo were also a combined 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Camille Thompson had three assists and four steals for the Falcons.
Texas Southern is led in scoring by Fleming, who is averaging 10.5 ppg. She also leads the squad with four assists and is second with five steals. On the boards, Crystal Anyium is averaging a team-leading 6.0 rpg, followed by Azalea Hall, with 5.0 rpg.
The matchups against the Catamounts and Islanders are the first-ever for the Huskies.
