AMES, Iowa - Houston Baptist led by as many as eight points, but Iowa State's stellar defense kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for over 11 minutes and went on from there to defeat HBU, 73-33, Friday evening at Hilton Coliseum.
Shanice Steenholdt led the Huskies with 13 points and five rebounds. She also had three steals and one block.
Devyn Weymouth finished second with eight points and
Joselyn Pugh scored six on two 3-pointers.
Destini Texada finished second with four rebounds and scored four points.
Hallie Christofferson led Iowa State with 13 points, while Chelsea Poppens led with 11 rebounds, followed by Fallon Ellis with 10.
On a night where Iowa State dropped its NCAA Tournament banner, HBU started the game on fire from the three-point line, as Pugh hit a three, which was answered by Nikki Moody's trey. Weymouth's three gave the Huskies a 6-3 lead. Pugh hit her second three to give HBU a 13-7 lead with 15:13 remaining in the opening half.
A Weymouth free throw gave the Huskies their largest lead of the night, at eight, 16-8, with 11:52 remaining before the Cyclones changed their defense from a man-to-man to full-court press. The Huskies could not adapt to the full-court press, converting 17 turnovers, as the Cyclones shut down the Huskies in the final 11+ minutes, outscoring the Huskies 30-0 in that span, to lead HBU at halftime, 38-16.
Christofferson led all players at the break with nine points, as Jessica Schroll had seven points and four rebounds. Poppens had a half-high seven rebounds.
Weymouth and Pugh tied for the team-high with six points. Prior to the Cyclone run, HBU had been shooting 50 percent from the floor (4-of-8), but ended the half shooting just 19 percent (4-of-21).
Iowa State continued the run at the beginning of the second half, as Poppens hit a jumper 18 seconds in, followed by a three by Moody, as the Cyclones led, 43-16 with 19:15 left in the second half.
The Huskies stopped the bleeding as Steenholdt hit a jumper at the 17:59-mark, ending ISU's 35-0 run.
A layup by Weymouth made the score 47-20 with 15:45 remaining, before ISU went on an 8-0 run to lead 55-20 with 13:08 left in the second half. Three of those baskets came on a fast break.
HBU scored four unanswered on a free throw by Texada and Steenholdt and a layup by Steenholdt, before ISU increased its lead to 40 with 6:56 remaining, 66-26, thanks to three-pointers by Brynn Williamson and Kelsey Harris.
In the final six minutes of the game,
Emily Jenkins had two blocks and Steenholdt recorded a steal, as the furthest ISU led was 44, while HBU kept it as low as 40, on two occasions.
The differences in the game were points in the paint – which ISU led 34-6 – and points off turnovers – ISU led 26-10. Bench points were 28-4 in favor of the Cyclones.
HBU (0-1) will conclude the weekend road trip at UMKC Sunday at 1 pm.
