MISSOURI CITY, Texas – Houston Baptist University senior
Mark Slater fired the lowest round of the day, a career-best 3-under par 68 to lead the Huskies to the lowest team round of the day at 1-over par 285 to jump two spots and finish as the runner-up at their home tournament, the HBU Husky Intercollegiate, Tuesday at the 6,931-yard, par-71 Quail Valley El Dorado Golf Course.
Slater got off to a great start, chipping in for eagle on his second hole, then finishing strong with birdies on four of the last seven holes. He tied for 18
th overall with a score of 222. Freshmen
Brandon Wilhide and
Preston Stanley were the Huskies' top finishers, tying for 11
th. Wilhide also recorded a career-best with a 1-under par 70 as did Stanley with a 1-over par 72. Freshman
Andy Ariens shot a 77 and tied for 27
th at 225, while freshman
Jeffrey Merrell carded a 75 and tied for 35
th at 228.
Competing individually for the Huskies, sophomore
Jonathan Marek finished 44
th at 236 with a final-round 84. Senior
Ian Armstrong tied for 46
th at 239 and shot 85, junior
Hudson Hansard tied for 48
th at 244 with an 85, and senior
Andrew Rollins finished 50
th at 251, shooting a 79.
Texas A&M won the team title with a score of 852, 20 strokes ahead of HBU. The Huskies finished three strokes ahead of Stephen F. Austin, four ahead of Louisiana-Monroe and five ahead of McNeese State.
Texas A&M's Greg Yates shot a 1-under par 70 to claim the individual title with a score of 9-under par 204, four strokes better than McNeese State's Mick Huffman and five strokes better than Houston's Jesse Droemer.
The tournament was the Huskies' final event of the fall portion of the schedule. HBU will return to action at the Rice Intercollegiate Feb. 20-21 at Westwood Country Club in Houston.
