ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas-Arlington shot 58 percent from the field and withstood a Houston Baptist rally in the second half for a 72-57 victory in non-conference basketball Wednesday night at Texas Hall.
HBU senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies (1-12) with 15 points. Junior forward Terry Bembry recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Shawn Echols added 13 points, while junior forward Sammy Obethoh finished with 10.
Brandon Edwards led the Mavericks (6-7) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bo Ingram added 13 points, Jordan Reves had 12, while Cameron Catlett and LaMarcus Reed had 11 apiece.
HBU took the early lead at 16-12 with 11:03 left in the first half, but UTA went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:52 to take a seven-point lead. The Mavericks took that same advantage into halftime, 31-24. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with UTA shooting 36.7 percent, and were 0-for-8 from 3-point range, while HBU shot 35.7 percent. The Mavericks, however, made 9-of-11 free throws, while the Huskies made only 2-of-7.
UTA upped its lead to 12 early in the second half and held a 44-32 lead after a pair of technical free throws when HBU head coach Ron Cottrell was ejected with 12:51 remaining in the game. The Huskies responded by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to cut the Mavericks' lead to five. After withstanding the HBU rally, UTA answered with an 8-0 run. UTA stretched its lead to as many as 16 down the stretch before settling on the final margin.
UTA shot 46.3 percent for the game, while HBU shot only 34.0 percent. The Mavericks hit only 1-of-12 3-pointers but 21-of-28 free throws, while the Huskies hit 4-of-16 from behind the arc and 17-of-30 from the charity stripe. UTA outrebounded HBU, 40-35, but the Huskies held a 16-12 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Huskies return home to host Duquesne in the final tune-up before conference play Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
