HOUSTON – Coming off a conference-opening road trip in which they lost at Chicago State and NJIT, the HBU women's Basketball team opens the home portion of the conference slate with in-state rival, UT-Pan American on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 5:15 pm in Sharp Gym.

UTPA leads the all-time series, 8-1, and won all three meetings last season, including a showdown in the conference quarterfinals last March in Utah. The first meeting was a 13-point win at UTPA, while the other two meetings UTPA won nine points combined. The last time the Huskies defeated the Lady Broncs was in the 2007-08 season – HBU's first year in NCAA Division I – where the Huskies won at UTPA, 56-53.

HBU (2-15, 0-2 GWC) began Great West Conference play last Thursday with a 92-64 loss at Chicago State and followed that with an 82-55 defeat at NJIT. The Huskies are now 0-3 all-time against both the Cougars and the Highlanders.

Destini Texada led the Huskies in points and rebounding and averaged 16 ppg and 8.5 rpg. She almost recorded her fifth double-double on the year, at NJIT, as she finished with 16 points, nine rebounds. She has now led the team in points in five of the last seven games and six of the last seven in rebounds.

Megan Green tied a career-high hitting four 3-pointers in Saturday's loss at NJIT. She has now hit seven long-balls in the last two games and has shot 28 percent from downtown (10-for-36) in the last four games.

Texada is 10th in the league in points per game, averaging 12.3. She is third in the conference in rebounds per game, averaging 7.9 a game.

Tia Jackson leads the Huskies in both assists (67) and steals (27). She is eighth in the conference in steals per game, averaging 1.6. As a team, HBU is shooting 38 percent from the floor.

The Huskies and Lady Broncs have played five common opponents: Texas Southern, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State, NJIT and Chicago State. The Huskies are 1-4 while the Lady Broncs are 2-3. Both HBU and UTPA defeated Sam Houston State, a team that is 3-0 in the Southland Conference for the first time in seven years.

UTPA (8-12, 0-2 GWC) is in the midst of a five-game losing streak as the Lady Broncs opened conference play with a 68-60 loss at NJIT on Thursday and an 86-61 setback at Chicago State two days later.
Ce'Monay Newell averaged 15.0 points in the two games as she led the Lady Broncs with 16 points at NJIT and was second on the team with 14 points at CSU. Bianca Torre averaged 9.5 ppg for UTPA. Donna Jackson averaged eight rebounds in the two games.

UTPA boasts the second-highest scoring team in the league, behind Chicago State. The Lady Broncs are averaging 67.8 ppg, but the Lady Broncs are last in points allowed, giving up 81.2 ppg. The Huskies are last in scoring offense (52.4 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (77.6 ppg).
