CHICAGO - With no weather delays in the forecast, Head Coach
Mary Gleason and her Huskies are set to begin Great West Conference play this evening, Jan. 13, against Chicago State.
HBU (
2-13) will face Great West Conference preseason favorite Chicago State (
8-8, 1-0 GWC) at 5 p.m. Following the game, HBU will continue its two-game road swing at NJIT on Saturday, Jan. 15.
This is the third meeting against both Chicago State and NJIT. HBU is 0-2 against both teams all-time. The Huskies lost 77-49 at Chicago State on Feb. 4, 2010. CSU had four players score in double figures, led by Janay Dockery with 14 points. Natalie Marlowe had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Caila Desroches had 10 points and 11 rebounds for CSU in a 71-57 win over HBU at Sharp Gym on Jan. 14, 2010.
HBU concluded non-conference play with a 73-36 loss at Texas Tech on Jan. 3. The Lady Raiders scored the game's first 27 points before the Huskies got on the board at the 8:30 mark of the first half. Entering the contest, Texas Tech was receiving Top 25 consideration in the national rankings.
Jamie Spriggs started her second straight game and scored a game-high 14 points.
Destini Texada led the Huskies with eight rebounds and added eight points, seven coming in the second half.
Texada, a sophomore from Elsik High School, leads the team in both points (11.8) and rebounds (7.9) per game. Texada has a team high four double-doubles this season. As a team, HBU is shooting 37 percent from the floor.
Chicago State (8-8, 1-0 GWC) opened conference play with a 79-46 victory against Utah Valley on Jan. 8.
Tressa Beckel scored a career-high 28 points and was named GWC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Beckel is nearly averaging a double-double for Chicago State, averaging 18.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg. She also leads the Cougars with 29 blocks and 38 steals.
Courtney Waldon and
Janay Dockery are second and third in scoring, averaging 15.1 and 13.3 ppg, respectively. As a team, Chicago State is shooting 40 percent from the floor.
The Cougars non-conference schedule includes victories over three Mid-American Conference teams in Western Michigan, Ohio University and Miami (OH) and a road win at Horizon League power, Valparaiso. Chicago State has endured four tough losses by four points or less to the SEC's Auburn, 63-67, Big X cross-town rival Northwestern, 73-75, and Northern Illinois of the MAC, 64-68. The biggest heartbreak was a one-point loss to Conference USA stronghold, Memphis.
NJIT
(4-10, 1-0 GWC) opened conference play Wednesday night and defeated visiting UT-Pan American, 68-60.
Jessica Gerald, who has led the Highlanders in scoring the past three games, leads the team with 14.3 ppg while
Rayven Johnson leads the squad with 5.9 rpg and is third on the team with 10.5 ppg. As a team, NJIT is shooting 36 percent from the floor.
HBU won its first non-conference game Division I game in two seasons when it defeated Sam Houston State 51-48 earlier this season. The last non-conference Division I victory was a 73-59 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Feb. 27, 2009.
