YANKTON, S.D. -- Closing out a brief career that cemented her status as one of the all-time great female athletes at HBU, Cindee Wright romped to three golds Saturday, sweeping the sprint titles to lead the Huskies on the final day of the Great West Conference Championships at Williams Field. Thanks to Wright's efforts, the HBU women's team finished third, a placing matched by the men's squad.
"Rarely does someone as talented as Cindee Wright walk through your doors," said head coach Theresa Fuqua. "We were incredibly blessed this year to be able to share in her talents and her incredible drive and desire to win, no matter who she was up against. She truly set the tone for us today. Our men did a superb job, with so many outstanding individual performances, especially from our throwers and our distance crew, and I am extremely proud of the efforts we saw from all the Huskies."
Wright opened the day by anchoring the Huskies to gold in the 4x100 relay, teaming up with Brittane Gaines, Tramisha McGrew and Joslyn Cooper to clock 45.84 and smash the championships record. The time was almost a second faster than the runners-up from South Dakota. She followed with a convincing 11.72 win in the 100, with teammate Gaines grabbing the silver, and nabbed her third gold with a 24.22 in the 200.
In her final race as a Husky, Wright chipped in a 54.5 leg on the 4x400 relay to help her team of Disa Foster, McGrew and Pressley take the silver in a thrilling battle with Utah Valley.
Maximo Mendoza, who Thursday won the 10,000 in record time, came back to win a bronze in the 5,000 to lead HBU's men. Johnathan LeJeune was fifth in that race behind Mendoza. Freshman Bryan Richardson knocked more than a quarter-second off his personal best to claim bronze in the 110 hurdles at 15.08.
The day's other bronze came in the 4x400, where Donovan Brittian, Brandon Boyd, LaDarien Harris and Jason Euresti shattered the squad's season best with a 3:17.86 on the strength of Harris's 48.4 third leg.
Euresti also notched a lifetime best of 1:54.17 to take fifth in the 800, and Boyd overcame the tight curve of lane one to finish sixth in the 200.
Other top performances came from Matt Perri, who recorded a personal best of 3:58.89 for seventh in the 1500, and Gabe O'Neale, who was fourth in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 400 hurdles, with lifetime bests in both events.
Boyd, Harris, Brittian and Jonathan Staples turned in a season best of 42.44 for fifth in the 4x100 relay. Freshman Jake Adkins polished off a great set of performances by scoring in his fourth throwing event, taking seventh in the javelin.
Pressley was fifth in the 400 at 56.44, with Foster and McGrew in seventh and eighth, and she took seventh in the 200 ahead of Cooper, who was eighth. Cooper was also seventh in the 100. In the women's triple jump, senior Toni Dickerson ended her HBU career with a seventh-place finish.
HBU scored 122 points in the men's competition to easily claim third behind UVU and South Dakota, and the women's squad tallied 81 to edge North Dakota out of the third spot behind UVU and USD.
