NACOGDOCHES, Texas – HBU women's basketball returned to action after an eight-day Christmas break and lost at Stephen F. Austin State, 95-53, Tuesday evening at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA jumped out to a 19-6 lead within the first five minutes as the game, as the Ladyjacks hit five 3-pointers. The Ladyjacks cooled a bit behind the three-point line, but didn't stall their overall scoring, as SFA led at halftime, 53-26.
Tia Jackson led HBU with seven points, followed by Jamie Spriggs with six. Destini Texada led the Huskies on the glass with three rebounds. Tammara Marion led SFA with 15 points and Decreasha Goodner added 12. Chantol Drennan had a half-high eight rebounds. The Ladyjacks set a season-high of three-pointers made, at halftime. SFA hit 10-of-19 (53 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Ladyjacks nearly doubled the Husky second-half point total entering the midway point of the second half, outscoring HBU 14-8 to lead the game 67-34. The three-point barrage had cooled (0-for-4) but SFA shot 39 percent from the floor to just 22 percent for HBU.
“Every day is a learning process to get better,” said head coach Mary Gleason. “SFA hit great shots in the first half and we played better defensively in the second half."
SFA was held to 44 percent from the floor in the second half, 49 percent for the game. The Ladyjacks were led in scoring by Goodner with 21 points, followed by Marion with 17. Drennan ended the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Texada led the Huskies with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jamie Spriggs also finished in double-figures, netting 10 points. HBU shot just 30 percent from the floor in the second half and 36 percent for the game.
“We have to learn from this game and prepare ourselves for our next opponent,” stated Gleason.
HBU's (2-11) next opponent will be the University of Houston, the final game of 2010 for the Huskies. Tip-off is set for a 7 pm start on Thursday, Dec. 30.
