HOUSTON – After a 10-day layoff, the HBU women's basketball team returns to action for two road contests this weekend. The Huskies will face Sam Houston State on Saturday at 1 pm, followed by a 5 pm tip-off at Texas Southern on Sunday.
The Huskies are 2-0 all-time against the Bearkats and 1-1 with the Tigers.
HBU (1-7) earned its first victory of the season with a 77-48 home win over Wiley College on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Destini Texada and Ernesta Griciunaite set new career bests in points and rebounds. Texada scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Griciunaite had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Brittany Barton tied a career-high with 12 points.
Wiley's leading scorer coming into the game, Brittany Smith-Banks, led the Wildcats with 15 points. Christina Kincade added 10.
Texada leads the Huskies with 11.9 ppg while Griciunaite is tops with 8.1 rpg. As a team, HBU is shooting 39 percent from the floor.
Sam Houston State (6-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with a home 67-55 victory over Grambling State on Dec. 6, but then lost at North Texas Wednesday night by a score of 75-69. SHSU is 3-0 at home and 0-4 on the road this season.
Sequeena Thomas led the Bearkats with 17 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Britni Martin with 14 points. Clarke Davis had a solid game, with nine points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Five Mean Green scored in double-figures, led by Tamara Torru with 18 points.
Martin is averaging 16.6 ppg for SHSU, followed by Thomas with 15.0 and Chanice Smith with 11.8. Thomas leads the team with 9.9 rpg. As a team, the Bearkats are shooting 39 percent from the floor.
Texas Southern (1-6) snapped a season-opening six-game losing streak with a home 64-63 win over Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 4. Jasmine Payne recorded a double-double for the Tigers, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
NaDosha Strickland leads the Tigers with 13.0 ppg, followed by Gabrielle Rosiji and Payne with 9.0 ppg apiece. Payne leads all Tigers on the glass with 6.7 rpg. TSU is shooting 34 percent from the floor.
