HUSKIES CLOSE OUT INAUGURAL INDOOR SEASON AT HOUSTON

Rodriguez, Johnson top performers

Trey Rodriguez finished third in the men's shot put with another stellar performance and Ashley Johnson set a season best to place fourth in the women's high jump as the Houston Baptist University track and field teams closed out an impressive inaugural indoor campaign Saturday at the University of Houston.

Rodriguez, who set a school record last week, tossed the shot 15.33 meters/50-3.5 to take the bronze, while Johnson cleared 1.63m/5-4.25 to tie for fouth.

"These two teams really showed a lot today," said head coach Theresa Fuqua. "It has been a learning experience for every member of the Huskies, and today's effort was a super way to close out this first season indoors. Now we look forward to carrying this improvement into the outdoor season next month."

In the women's mile Gus Newmeyer had another top-six showing, taking fifth at 5:18.47, and Erica Clark turned in the most impressive personal best of the meet with a 5:37.13 clocking. Field event bests were also notched by long jumpers Toni Dickerson and Omni Ashford, who placed 13th and 15th with leaps of 5.11m/16-9.25 and 5.03m/16-6, respectively.

The men's distance medley relay team of Sid Makhunga, Citri Bell, Spencer McGuffey and Josh Pantoja had a season-best of 10:45.42 to finish third. McGuffey later had a season best in the 800 with a 2:00.12 to finish fifth overall. Jocques Robinson won his heat of the 200 in 22.73 and was eighth overall.

HBU will open the outdoor season March 14-15 at the Whataburger Relays in San Antonio.
