BSB: HCU Hosts Colonels in SLC Series

The two teams sit seventh and eighth in the SLC standings

HOUSTON – HCU baseball will look to build on its 24-run offensive explosion on Tuesday night when the Huskies host the Nicholls Colonels for a three-game Southland Conference series at Husky Field this Thursday through Saturday.

The Huskies (13-16, 5-7 SLC) posted the program's highest single-game run total since 2008 on Tuesday evening in a 24-4 win over visiting Texas Southern. HCU scored an incredible 14 runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with designated hitter Luke Bard reaching base safely three times during the inning via a walk and two singles. 11 different players recorded hits for the Huskies with five players finishing with multiple hits.

HCU currently ranks 13th nationally with 19 sacrifice flies this season with Tyree Jackson's three leading the team. Additionally, the Huskies have belted an SLC-leading 58 doubles this season and are among the top-50 in the nation in the category. Senior Katcher Halligan leads the team with nine doubles while also tied for the team lead with four home runs.

On the mound, starter Joshua Caravalho picked up his second win of the season last Saturday in a 4-3 win at Stephen F. Austin. The senior righty struck out six and walked two while allowing three earned runs on just two hits in five innings.

Nicholls (14-16, 6-8 SLC) is coming off a 6-2 loss at Tulane on Tuesday after dropping two games in a three-game weekend series to Northwestern State at home.

Haden Luke owns a 4-1 record on the mound for the Colonels, making seven starts this year. The senior struck out 14 batters in six innings of work last weekend against Northwestern State and leads the team with 43 punchouts.

Junior infielder Caston Thompson has emerged as Nicholls' biggest power threat, hitting a team-high eight home runs along with six doubles so far this year. Keegan Giger is leading the Colonels with eight stolen bases on 10 attempts.
