Houston Christian University returns to conference action on Friday when it hosts Stephen F. Austin State University in a three-game series at Husky Field. In what has now turned into a seven-game stay on the home dirt, the Huskies will host the Lumberjacks in an important series for both teams as the midway point of the conference slate looms. The two teams are tied for the eighth and final spot in the postseason field and will play a doubleheader starting at 4 pm on Friday with the series finale set for noon on Saturday.

On Tuesday the Huskies dropped a 6-2 decision to Texas Southern University at Husky Field, as the Tigers rallied with a six-spot in the sixth to get away with the victory.

The game, originally scheduled for Memorial Park but moved to HCU on Monday due to scheduling conflicts, was a pitcher's duel for four innings before HCU broke the ice with two runs in the fifth. Breana Herrera and Cara Pitman had consecutive RBI singles through the right side to hand the Huskies a 2-0 lead, but that advantage was short-lived as TSU plated six in the bottom of the sixth.

Jocelyn Briseno was 2-4 while Herrera and Pitman each collected a hit and RBI. The Huskies had eight hits but stranded 11 runners. Addy Prasifka took the loss, scattering seven hits over 5.1 innings.

In its most recent conference action last weekend, HCU saw Texas A&M-Corpus Christi take two of three at Husky Field. After a pair of pitching gems on Friday by Cara Pitman and Leah Hammack, the Huskies saw the Islanders put three on the board in the first frame and six over the first three innings. To take the finale on Saturday 6-2. Corpus had won the Friday's doubleheader opener 3-1 before HCU captured the nightcap 6-1.

Mary-Ellen Hall is now in her 35th season with her alma mater, and her Huskies are now 5-24 overall and 2-7 in Southland action on the season.

Maddy Bailey leads the team with a .313 batting average, having raised it 100 points since returning to the lineup after the six-game week of the UTSA game and the Bearkat Invitational. She posted her fourth career three-hit game vs. UTEP (2/27) and then went 5-10 with three RBI in the three-game set against Northwestern State. She is tied for the team lead in hits, homers and doubles, and leads the team in runs scored.

Madison Dominguez had a 12-game hitting streak and 13-game stretch of safely reaching the bags earlier in the season, snapped at SLU. She is currently second on the team in batting at .303, is tied for the team lead in hits with 20 and paces the club on the basepaths with nine stolen bases.

Chloe Foster hit her first career homer in game two against TAMUCC and she now leads the team with 13 RBI.  Jocelyn Briseno had her first career four-hit game in the 8-6 victory over Prairie View A&M at the Bearkat Invitational (2/21) and is second on the team in runs scored (8) and RBI (8). She is batting .385 over her last four games.

HCU and SFA have met 52 times with the Lumberjacks holding a 34-18 lead in the all-time series. Since joining the Southland in 2013, the two clubs have met 26 times, with SFA's lead just 14-12. The Jacks took two of three last season in Nacogdoches, winning 8-0 and 9-1 before HCU salvaged the series finale with a 4-2 win.

Jeff Jackson is in his third season at the helm in the Piney Woods, and has his squad sitting at 17-16 overall and 2-7 in league play.

The Jacks are led on offense by senior second baseman Ellie Vance, who leads the team in batting (.387), hits (43) and stolen bases (10). Sophomore outfielder Malia Jones has provided the big bat in the middle of the lineup, leading the squad with seven homers and 24 RBI.

In the circle, the Jacks are led by sophomore right-hander Crimson Bryant, who is 4-7 with a 3.15 ERA. She has made 15 appearances with 12 starts and four shutouts, fanning 68 in 66.2 innings of work. Grad righty Amelia Hatthorn has provided solid relief work, going 5-2 with a 2.27 ERA and two saves in 21 appearances, 18 out of the pen.

Following the series with SFA, the Huskies will hit the road for nine of their next 12 games, beginning with a three-game Easter Weekend series in the Alamo City against long-time rival University of the Incarnate Word.
