SB: Busy week begins with Tuesday tilt vs. UTSA in Alamo City

Huskies take to Huntsville over weekend for five games in three days at Bearkat Invitational

A busy week for Houston Christian University starts in earnest on Tuesday night as the Huskies trek to the Alamo City for a mid-week contest against University of Texas San Antonio. First pitch from Roadrunner Field is slated for 6 pm, and marks the first of a scheduled six games over a five-day stretch for HCU, which plays in the Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville from Thursday to Saturday.

The Huskies are coming off a solid showing in their half of the Houston Invitational last week that opened the home portion of the 2026 schedule. HCU dropped games to University of Pittsburgh (3-2) of the ACC and to Michigan (6-1) and Penn State (4-1) of the Big 10 before capping the weekend with its first victory of the campaign, a come-from-behind 6-3 defeat of Lafayette College in the tournament finale on Saturday.

Senior outfielder Chloe Foster leads the HCU offense early on, batting .318 with a team-high seven hits and six RBI. Her first career-triple drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning of the win over the Leopards on Saturday.

Freshman Chloe Phe drove in her first career runs in the game with Lafayette, including a bases-loaded free pass in the fifth that knotted the score. Karlie Barba hit her first homer of the season in the loss to Penn State.

Cara Pitman, a sophomore right-hander, picked up her first victory of the season on Saturday, going the distance against Lafayette while allowing just three hits and one earned run with three punchouts.

HCU will face a UTSA team on Tuesday coming in at 2-6 overall after a 2-3 showing at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge last weekend. The Roadrunners are led by Taryn Madlock, a junior outfielder batting .500 with a homer and four RBI. Samantha Mundine, a junior transfer outfielder from McNeese is batting .364 with a team-high six RBI. Arlette Hernandez, a freshman right-hander, leads the pitching staff with a 2-1 record in six appearances with four starts, having struck out 19 in 24 innings.

The Huskies and Roadrunners have faced each other 31 times over the years, with the two schools having split the last six meetings. HCU won the most recent matchup, a 19-8 victory in San Antonio on April 14, 2023 in which the Huskies had four players hit five homers, including a pair by assistant coach Haylie Savage, who drove in eight runs on the evening.

Beginning on Thursday evening, the Huskies will play five times in three days against three schools in the Bearkat Invitational hosted by Sam Houston in Huntsville. The weekend kicks off with a 5:30 pm game against Sam, the first of two games against the Bearkats.

HCU will take on Prairie View A&M twice as well, first on Friday at 1:30 pm before the second meeting with Sam later that evening at 6:30 pm. The Huskies finish out the invitational on Saturday with matchups against Austin Peay at 11 am before a second tilt with PVAMU at 1:30 pm.

HCU and Sam have met 48 times all-time, the last coming last year on March 11, a 4-2 Bearkats win in Huntsville. Sam is currently 7-3 overall after a 4-1 showing in the Mardi Gras Mambo last weekend.

The Kats are led by two former Southland standouts. Bella Perez, a junior catcher who played at McNeese, leads the team with a .448 batting average, four homers and 10 RBI. Veronica Harrison, a junior first baseman who transferred from Lamar, hits .321 with two dingers and eight ribbies. Amy Abke, a junior righthander, is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA and 19 K's in 16 innings to lead the SHSU hurlers.

The Huskies and Panthers will meet for the 57th time, which will tie for the fifth-most played series in school history. HCU and PV haven't played since February 24, 2024 when the Huskies won 6-0 in the Husky Classic. The Panthers are 3-5 on the season after going 1-2 in the Rajun Cajun Classic last weekend, the one win being a 6-5 decision over host Louisiana.

Kayla Zaid paces the PVAMU offense with a .375 batting average and six RBI while Dyani McKinley bats .333 with a homer, five RBI and four stolen bases. Kayla Adams headlines the staff, sitting at a 1-1 mark with a 3.68 ERA in three starts for the Panthers.

Austin Peay and HCU have met just once, that coming last February 15 in the chilly Whataburger Invitational at Tarleton State when the Governors won 7-3. APSU is 5-5 on the campaign, and went 2-3 at the Carl Vincent Insurance Invitational hosted by McNeese last weekend, splitting a pair of games with the hosts as well as Lamar.

The Govs have crushed 15 homers in 10 games, led by junior outfielder Brie Howard (.394 / 4 HR / 17 RBI) and junior infielder Kiley Hinton (.294, 3 HR, 10 RBI). Alana Jones, a senior right-hander, is 3-2 in six appearances with a 3.04 ERA over 23 innings.
