BSB: Huskies Set to Open SLC Tournament Against Lamar

HCU enters the SLC Tournament as the No. 6 seed

EDINBURG, Texas – HCU Baseball is set to begin open the 2025 Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed on Thursday, May 15, when the Huskies face third-seeded Lamar at 1:00 p.m. in Edinburg, Texas.

The Huskies (27-23, 17-13 SLC) closed the 2025 regular season sixth in the SLC standings after being picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in the league's preseason poll. HCU is part of the SLC Tournament field for the first time since 2022.

HCU and Lamar (40-15, 20-10 SLC) met last weekend in the final SLC series of the regular season with the Cardinal sweeping the three-game set. HCU, however, bounced back with a midweek 6–3 win over Sam Houston on May 13 in Huntsville.

The Huskies' regular season featured standout individual performances with Rhett Hendricks earning second team all-conference recognition after leading the team in batting average (.328) and slugging percentage (.519). He raised that average to .356 in SLC play. Parker Edwards, meanwhile, paced HCU in RBIs (44), home runs (9), and total bases (93) while bringing his career total home runs to 28 to tie for second on the program's all-time list. Kenneth Dutka led in hits (63), runs (39), and stolen bases (10). On the mound, Joshua Caravalho notched a team-high eight wins to rank second in the conference, while Edwards led with 64 strikeouts.

The Cardinals are led by Damian Ruiz, who hit .395 with 75 runs scored and 127 total bases and was named the SLC Hitter of the Year. Brayden Evans drove in 54 runs with nine home runs, and Peyton Havard led the pitching staff with 7 wins and 76 strikeouts.

The Huskies and Cardinals are participating in the Edinburg Bracket of the SLC Tournament first round along with No. 2 seed UT Rio Grande Valley and No. 7 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The winner of the double-elimination Edinburg Bracket will go on to face the winner of the Hammond Bracket next week in a best-of-three series.
