BSB: HCU Hosts Islanders for Final Home Series

Senior Day set for Saturday as Huskies look to climb Southland standings

HOUSTON – HCU Baseball returns to Southland Conference play this weekend, closing out its home schedule with a three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Husky Field.

The series opens Friday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will precede Saturday's 2:00 p.m. contest, and the finale is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m.

The Huskies (24-19, 15-9 SLC) currently sit in sixth place in the Southland standings with a .625 conference winning percentage, just behind Northwestern State (.630) and Lamar (.667) in a tightly packed top half. HCU sits just three games behind first-place Southeastern. The Huskies have been strong at home this season, posting a 14-6 record, and will look to capitalize before finishing the regular season on the road at Lamar next weekend.

The last time these two teams met was on April 14, 2024, when HCU erased a five-run deficit but ultimately fell short in a wild 13-12 shootout in game three at Chapman Field.

HCU is coming off a 10–4 midweek win over Tarleton State at home on Wednesday evening. HCU's 10 runs in the win were the team's most since a 17-10 win over Northwestern State on Apr. 11 while the Huskies' pitching staff stranded 11 Texan baserunners.

In conference play, the Huskies' offense has been led by Rhett Hendricks with a .361 batting average with four home runs and six doubles. Kenneth Dutka is hitting .358 and leads the team with 24 runs scored. Parker Edwards has been the most consistent power threat for HCU against SLC foes, blasting seven home runs with eight doubles and a league-leading 33 runs batted in.

On the mound versus SLC opponents, Joshua Caravalho has earned five wins to lead the staff while closer Ben Norton has notched six saves with a 2.25 ERA. As a team, HCU has issued just 77 walks in SLC games, the second-lowest mark in the conference.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16-27, 8-16 SLC) enters the weekend after taking two of three against UIW, winning 10-6 and 10-5 before falling 9-3 in the finale. The Islanders are led offensively by Austin Russell, who owns a .336 batting average and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 298 putouts. Jackson Smith provides power with a .564 slugging percentage and six home runs, while Cade Sanchez leads in runs (30), doubles (11), and total bases (63). On the mound, Zach Garcia anchors the rotation with a 4.20 ERA and five wins across 70.2 innings.

Following this weekend's series, HCU will conclude the regular season with a three-game road set at Lamar, beginning Thursday, May 8, before heading to Huntsville for a final midweek game at Sam Houston on Tuesday, May 13.
