HCU looks to continue strong offensive performance in conference play

HOUSTON – HCU baseball returns home for a three-game Southland Conference series against Stephen F. Austin at Husky Field this weekend with the series beginning Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m., followed by games on Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m.

The Huskies (14-8, 7-2 SLC) are coming off a 7-2 non-conference loss at Texas A&M earlier in the week but have been excellent so far in SLC play, boasting a .318 team batting average with 99 hits and 76 runs through nine games. Matthew Leiterman leads the team, hitting .444 against conference opponents, while Rhett Hendricks (.406) and Katcher Halligan (.382) have also been key contributors. Parker Edwards has provided power at the plate, leading the team with five home runs and an .857 slugging percentage. On the mound, Ben Norton has already recorded three saves while fellow reliever Louis Castano owns a 2-0 record with a 3.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts in just eight innings of work. Parker Edwards has a 3.07 ERA across three SLC starts with a 1-0 record.

Stephen F. Austin (9-16, 2-7 SLC) dropped its most recent midweek non-conference game at Houston, 9-2, on Tuesday. The Lumberjacks are hitting .207 as a team in SLC play with a team average of .257 over the course of the season. Josh Ibe leads the offense with nine home runs, 25 RBI and 24 runs scored. On the mound, Cody Templeton sports a 2.41 ERA in six starts with a 3-1 record, issuing just six walks compared to 30 punchouts. As a team, however, SFA has a combined ERA of 7.05.

The Huskies are 18-24 all-time against the Lumberjacks but have won the last three meetings.

Following the series, HCU will travel for a midweek non-conference matchup at Baylor on Tuesday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Waco, Texas.
