BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Day one at the 2025 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships saw
Arlette Concepcion smash the HCU record in the 5000 meters en route to a silver medal while the women's Distance Medley Relay earned a bronze at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.
Concepcion, a senior, set a new program record while taking the silver in the 5000m with a time of 17:04.81 that bested the previous record by more than a full minute. The women's DMR team of

Noelle Huijser and
Destiny Quintanilla raced to a time of 11:48.59 to earn bronze.
Edouard Lecrivain, who entered the championships having set the HCU records in both the 800 meters and mile and led the SLC in both events, qualified for the finals in both events. He won his heat in the mile with a time 4:18.98 before winning his 800m heat in 1:52.51.
Eline Mast, also leading the league in both events on the women's side and the school record holder in the mile, also advanced in both. Mast won her mile prelim with a time of 5:02.93 before running a time of 2:16.11 to advance in the 800m. Also advancing after day one prelims are
SJ Marais, who won his 60 meter hurdles heat with a time of 8.22, while
Benny Haywood advanced with a time of 8.24.
Haywood, a freshman, sits in eighth place following the first four events of the heptathlon. Haywood opened thins with a PR time of 7.10 in the 60 meter dash to pick up 847 points. He then added 723 points with a top leap of 6.61m/21-8.25 in the long jump. Haywood added 524 points with a throw of 10.63m/34-10.50 in the shot put before closing the day by clearing 1.83m/6-0.0 in the high jump for 653 points. He totaled 2,727 points through four events.
Day two of the SLC Indoor Championships begins on Monday, Mar. 3, at 9:00 a.m.
