03 - AB Garcia (SLC Hitter of the Week)

SB: Garcia claims SLC Hitter of the Week honors

Junior led Huskies to three-game sweep of Northwestern State to open conference action

Houston Christian University's AB Garcia has been named the Southland Conference Jersey Mike's Hitter of the Week for the span of March 2-9. The junior outfielder helped set the table for a conference-opening three-game sweep of Northwestern State on the road, batting .727 on the weekend.

It is the second time this season an HCU player has been selected as Garcia joins Haylie Savage, who was named in the second week of the season. It is also the first-ever weekly accolade for Garcia from the conference.

Garcia got the series in Natchitoches started in impressive fashion by recording her third career four-hit game as the Huskies won 8-3. Three of her four hits were for extra bases, including two triples, which tied a single-game record last done in 2019 by Heidi Jaquez.  Garcia finished the game 4-4 while adding a double, two runs scored, a stolen base and two runs driven in.

The Cypress, Texas native came back in the second game of the doubleheader to go 2-2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored as HCU held on for a 7-5 victory. In the series finale on Saturday, Garcia posted yet another three-hit game, going 3-5 with an RBI and run scored as the Huskies finished off the three-game sweep with an 8-6 win.

Garcia, who was named to the All-Conference team and as the SLC Freshman of the Year in 2023, was 8-11 on the weekend with five of those going for extra bases. She also scored six times and drove in four runs. She now has seven games this season of three hits or more, five coming in the last six games. The four-hit game was the third of her career and first since recording the first two in the same week during April of 2023 against UTSA and East Texas A&M. She now has 13 games with three or more hits in her career.

A junior outfielder, Garcia now leads HCU in batting average, hits, runs scored, triples, stolen bases and total bases. She currently ranks first in the Southland Conference in hits, runs scored and batting average, and is second in each of the split lines (SLG / OB / OPS).

The stolen base on Friday in the opener was the 44th of her career, tying her with Cindy Connell (1995-98) for second place on the all-time charts. She is also now just 17 hits and 17 runs scored away from moving into the top 10 in each of those categories.

Garcia and HCU head to Huntsville on Tuesday evening for their first mid-week game as they take on former Southland foe Sam Houston State University in a game that caps off a 17-game stretch away from home. A return to Husky Field comes on Friday when HCU begins a three-game series with defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana.
