SB: Savage takes home SLC Hitter of the Week honors

Senior batted .615 in split of four games, now carries seven-game hitting streak

Houston Christian University's Haylie Savage has been named the Southland Conference Jersey Mike's Hitter of the Week for the span of February 10-16. The senior third baseman helped HCU to a split of four games in the Whataburger Invitational Tournament hosted by Tarleton State last weekend.

A three-time All-Southland Conference selection, Savage batted .615 (8-13) on the week and posted two three-hit games to give her a dozen such in her career with three hits or more. She had a double and a triple whilst driving in four runs as HCU went 1-1 on both Friday and Saturday, beating Akron and South Dakota State with losses to the host Texans and Austin Peay.

The Angleton, Texas native upped her season average to .458 and she has hit safely in the last seven ball games. She now leads the club with a .667 slugging percentage and has an OPS of 1.148 through eight games. It is her first career Hitter of the Week honor, and the first for HCU since the second week of last season when Jasie Roberts earned the accolade.

Savage started every game last year for the Huskies for the third consecutive season while establishing new single-season personal-bests in runs scored, doubles, homers, walks and stolen bases. Second on the club with her .301 batting average, Savage hit eight homers and drove in 28, both team-highs. She also led the team in runs, doubles, walks, OPS and SLG% and was second on the team with 11 multi-hit games and ranked third in the Southland in homers, seventh in slugging, runs scored and doubles and 10th in OPS and RBI.

Off to a solid start this season, she is already tied for seventh in career doubles while also rapidly approaching Top 10 lists in several other categories. Savage needs just 13 hits, one homer, one RBI and 19 runs to hit those charts amongst others.

HCU is 2-6 after two weekends and plays in its third straight tournament this weekend when the ladies head to Monroe, Louisiana for the Warhawk Invitational. The Huskies will play against host ULM twice, Eastern Illinois twice and Southern University once.

Alexis Telford of Stephen F. Austin State was named SLC Pitcher of the Week.
