HOUSTON – HCU and McNeese remained locked in a tightly-contested scoreless draw for more than 89 minutes until
Ella Remy put the hosts ahead for a 1-0 win and a spot in the 2025 Southland Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
Isabella Dillow nearly put HCU (8-8-2, 3-4-2 SLC) ahead in the 13
th minute with a long-range strike that bounced off the crossbar. As the half wore on,
Olivia Rossman and
Cloe Baugh each had shots on target but they were stopped by McNeese (4-10-4, 3-4-2 SLC) keeper Celeste Marijnissen. HCU's
Terra Rybuck made three stops in the first half to keep things scoreless.
The Huskies continued on in the second half, putting three more attempts on goal before the final minute while not allowing a single Cowgirl shot on target of their six attempts. The Huskies' breakthrough came in the final minute when a long ball played downfield was quickly played to
Jasmine Diaz by
Paisley Barela with Diaz pushing forward with a quick dribble before playing a through ball in front of the goal to a racing Remy who slotted the ball past Maijnissen and iside the left post for the game-winner.
Remy's goal was her second in as many games and her second of the season. The assists were the second of the year for both Barela and Diaz. Rybuck ended the day with three saves for her third shutout of the year.
The Huskies now stand at 11 points in a tie for sixth place in the Southland Conference standings, two points clear of UIW and UT Rio Grande Valley who each have nine points in an eighth-place tie with just a matchup against each other left.
The Huskies head north to Commerce, Texas to face the East Texas A&M Lions this Thursday, Oct. 30, for their regular season finale.
