LAKE CHARLES, La. – Following the team's first Southland Conference win of the season, HCU football heads across state lines for the first time in more than a month to take on the McNeese Cowboys at Navarre Stadium this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Nicholas Pietrzycki provides audio play-by-play on Patriot Talk 920 AM.
HCU (2-4, 1-1 SLC) has won its last two meetings with the Cowboys (1-5, 0-2 SLC), earning a 35-24 win in Lake Charles during the 2024 season before knocking off a McNeese team ranked No. 22 in the nation at Husky Stadium in 2025. In that win last season, the Huskies ran for a school record 414 yards on the ground.
Last weekend, the Huskies evened their conference record with a 20-17 home win over Northwestern State. Redshirt freshman running back
Xai'Shaun Edwards exploded for 214 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns for the second-most single-game rushing yards in program history and SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Punter
Brady Young also picked up a weekly award, garnering Special Teams Player of the Week recognition after averaging 46.8 yards per punt and burying NSU inside their own five on two of his four kicks.
The HCU defense has registered at least one interception in five-of-six games this year and has two picks in four of those. As a result, HCU has nine interceptions on the year to lead the Southland and tie for third in the nation in the category. Linebacker
Rodney Dansby, meanwhile, now sits at 397 career tackles for the third-highest total in program history with just 18 more before he ties Brennan Young for second on the list. The program record belongs to Garrett Dolan who amassed 467 tackles in his career.
McNeese has lost five-straight since opening the season with a 54-9 win over Louisiana Christian. The Cowboys had a bye last week but in their last game two weeks ago they fell at home to Southeastern, 38-0. In that loss, the Lions held the Cowboys to just 37 yards through the air and 189 yards of total offense.
Jake Strong has completed 94-of-168 passes with seven touchdowns and six interceptions this season with receiver Jonathan Harris leading the team with four touchdown receptions on 15 catches for 194. Running back Tre'Vonte Citizen is averaging 6.3 yards per carry on a team-high 51 rushes. Defensively, safety Shoes Brinkley has recorded a team-high 46 tackles while Masey Lewis leads the way with 3.5 sacks.
The Huskies are back at home next week to face Southeastern on Oct. 25 at Husky Stadium with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
