CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HCU stifled a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team that was averaging 1.5 goals per game but failed to find the net in a 0-0 draw to open Southland Conference women's soccer play at Dr. Jack Dugan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Islanders (3-2-4, 0-0-1 SLC) tested HCU (2-5-3, 0-0-1 SLC)) goalkeeper
Emmy McKeon in the seventh minute with a shot on goal by Ashley Wilson. Less than a minute later, HCU's
Emily Jaimes saw a shot from about 10 yards out to the left of goal beat the keeper but miss just outside the right crossbar by inches. The Islanders put three more attempts on goal in the first half while the Huskies didn't manage any.
The Huskies registered a pair of shots on goal midway through the second half off the feet of
Jordan Bushnell and
Adi Radwanski before a pair of on target attempts by the hosts, including a close-range shot by Cilia Leal that McKeon kept out close to the near post.
In the 85
th minute,
Danika Etter sent a cross into the box that Radwanski redirected on goal but the late attempt was saved by TAMUCC's Zoe Theriot. That was the last shot attempt of the match as the two teams battled to the draw.
For the match, TAMUCC held a 12-5 advantage in shots, putting six on target to the Huskies' three. The Islanders earned six corners with HCU earning one. Radwanski led the Huskies with two shots on goal and in goal, McKeon registered six saves in earning the shutout.
HCU is back home at Sorrels Field next weekend, hosting Nicholls on Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1:00 p.m.
