HOUSTON – In a well-played matchup that saw the two teams nearly even in shot attempts, it was Tarleton State that came out on top, earning a 2-0 win over the host HCU Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
The first decent look at the goal for either team came in the sixth minute when
Emily Jaimes had a shot attempt missed wide left. The Texans' (5-3-3) first shot attempt came at the 13:27 mark when Stevie Reynolds put a shot on target from inside the 18-yard box with
Emmy McKeon making the save for HCU (1-5-2). A few minutes later, in the 17
th minute,
Kayt Ward tried to loft a shot over the Tarleton keeper but Mikayla Kendall made the stop. McKeon made three saves in the first half but the visitors found the net in the 44
th minute when a cross from Sam Liaty found Lexi Gonzalez in front of goal and she sent it past McKeon for a 1-0 Tarleton lead at the half.
Just over a minute into the second half, Reegan Wagg took the ball down the left side and cut in toward goal before unleashing a long-range shot that made it over McKeon's head and into the net. HCU had a dangerous look later in the half in the 69
th minute when
Alexa Huerta ripped a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Kendall who recovered quick enough to stop
Adi Radwanski's shot off the rebound.
The Texans held a 10-8 advantage in shot attempts with seven on target to HCU's four on goal. The Huskies earned three corner kicks to TSU's one and both teams were charged with seven fouls.
The Huskies wrap up non-conference play on Friday, Sept. 20, with a trip to Prairie View, Texas to take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
