HOUSTON – HCU director of track & field/cross country
Theresa Fuqua announced the hiring of assistant coach Ray Doakes on Monday.
Doakes has spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Little Rock, working with the Trojans' jumpers. Prior to joining the staff at Little Rock, Doakes worked as a personal and volunteer coach with Olympians Tora Harris and Inika McPherson among the athletes he trained along with several Texas state champions.
"I am extremely happy to join the HCU family," said Doakes. "I look forward to helping our student-athletes with reaching their educational, and athletic, aspirations. Dawgs up!"
Doakes was a six-time first team all-American at Arkansas, winning the 1995 NCAA outdoor high jump title after placing second one and fourth twice. Indoor, he twice earned silver at the NCAA championship meet. Doakes became the first-ever student-athlete to claim four consecutive SEC outdoor high jump championships while also winning three consecutive indoor SEC titles.
In 1994, Doakes cleared 7-7.25/2.32m for a mark that remains the school record at Arkansas and is tied for 11
th on the all-time collegiate list. During his time as a Razorback, Arkansas won 16 SEC and NCAA Championships across indoor and outdoor competition.
