SB: Roberts named SLC Student-Athlete of the Year to lead trio with honors

Roberts is second HCU player to earn top academic honor; Savage, Swanson also earn All-Academic nods

FRISCO, Texas --- Houston Christian University's Jasie Roberts has been named the 2024 Southland Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Year to lead a trio of Huskies on the Academic All-Conference team.

Haylie Savage and Lyndie Swanson joined Roberts with the academic laurels to give HCU at least three honorees for the fourth straight season. It was the second straight season to be honored for Savage, while Swanson picks up her first career conference academic nod.

Roberts is the second HCU player to earn the league's top honor, joining Caitlyn Brockway who was named in 2022. The graduate student from Deer Park was named to the first team, becoming the first four-time conference academic honoree in school history, passing three-time recipients Brockway and Cecilia Bauer.

In her final season on Beechnut Street, Roberts led the team with a .338 batting average and 50 hits. She was second in slugging percentage, OPS, doubles, triples and runs scored. She hit three homers and drove in 21, both third on the club.

One of the most durable players in school history, Roberts missed just two games in her career. She started all but one in becoming just the eighth player to play in over 200 games at HCU.

She is also one of only nine players in school history with over 100 RBI and one of eight with over 180 hits. Roberts is the fourth player ever to accumulate over 600 at-bats and finishes her career tied for third in games played (209), second in at-bats (641), sixth in doubles (40), seventh in hits (189) and tied for seventh in RBI (105).

A four-time SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree as well as a two-time Easton-NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete, she has served as the President of HCU's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Council) for the last three years.

Roberts graduated in Spring of 2023 with a 3.97 GPA while earning degrees in both Biochemistry and Molecular Biology along with a minor in Mathematics. She will finish her Master's degree in Management and Entrepreneurship this summer and has been accepted to the John P. and Katherine McGovern Medical School of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where she begins this Fall.

Savage, a three-time All-Southland Conference selection, picks up academic honors for the second straight season. She currently carries a 3.56 GPA majoring in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Wellness Management.

A junior third baseman from Angleton, Savage took over at shortstop for the final 29 games of the season after a season-ending injury to starter Maggie Childs. She started every game for the Huskies for the third consecutive season and set single-season personal-bests in runs scored, doubles, homers, walks and stolen bases.

She was second on the Huskies in batting average, hitting at a .301 clip to go along with eight homers and 28 RBI, both team-highs. Savage also led the team in runs, doubles, walks, OPS and SLG% and was second on the team with 11 multi-hit games. She was third in the Southland in homers, seventh in slugging, runs scored and doubles and 10th in OPS and RBI.

A senior from Katy, Swanson completed her final campaign with the Huskies by earning academic honors for the first time in her career. She is a four-time Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and last year earned Easton-NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors.

She won six of her final eight decisions of the 2024 season to set a new personal best of 10 wins, the fourth straight season for her with nine or more victories. She finished 10-8 with a 2.93 ERA on the year and won two extra-inning complete games to give her a 5-0 career mark when going extra frames.

The SLC Pitcher of the Week after winning two games in the Nicholls series, Swanson ended the season leading the team in victories, ERA, appearances, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Her efforts placed herself at the top several career leaderboards at the finish of her career. She is first in all-time appearances in the circle as well as games saved, and ends fifth in innings pitched, seventh in shutouts, tied for eight in wins and 10th all-time in strikeouts.

Swanson graduated in the Summer of 2023, carrying a 3.50 GPA to earn a degree in Graphic Design. She is now pursuing a Master's degree in the School of Fine Arts Studio Art program and will serve as a Graduate Assistant Coach next year for HCU.

HCU was one of six schools with at least three players represented on the 2024 Southland Academic All-Conference teams. The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland institution.
