HOUSTON – The HCU men's and women's track & field teams are set for the 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in their hometown with the meet being held across town at Holloway Field on the Rice University campus this Thursday through Saturday.
Senior
Jessica Rabius, who reached the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet in the 800 meters last season, heads into the meet with the top time in the conference this season in the 1500 meters (4:20.61) and the second-best 800m time (2:07.62). Sophomore
Eline Mast, meanwhile, owns the sixth-fastest time (2:14.01) in the league in the 800m.
In the men's 800m, senior
Alex Piquart ranks second in the league with a school record time of 1:49.19 that ranks 46
th in the west region while fellow senior
Krzysztof Turski's top 800m time of 1:52.25 ranks seventh. In the men's 1500m, Piquart's top time of 3:48.14 is third in the SLC with Turski right behind him in fourth with a time of 3:51.01.
Senior
Justice Artisst heads into the meet with the second-fastest 5000 meter time, setting a new school record of 14:16.58 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. In the women's 5000m, sophomore
Destiny Quintanilla set a new program record in her first collegiate meet running the event with a time of 17:26.94 set at Holloway Field back in April. Quintanilla also ranks fifth in the conference this season with a time of 11:04.99 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
In hurdles, junior
Denzel Hinds comes in with a season-best mark of 53.03 in the 400 meter hurdles to rank third in the league while sophomore
Brianna Hinds ranks fifth in the 400h with a time of 1:03.47. In the men's 110 meter hurdles, a pair of freshmen check in in the league's top eight with
Ashton Munoz-Nieves owning a PR of 14.48 to rank fifth with
SJ Marais' top time of 14.64 putting him eighth on the league performance list.
In field events, freshman
Dadrian Calhoun holds the third-best triple jump mark in the conference and ranks 49
th in the west region with a top leap of 15.11m/49-7.0. Fellow freshman
Josh Gillis-Harry ranks seventh with a jump of 14.72m/48-3.5. Senior
Tasheba Pleasant is sixth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 12.02m/39-5.25. In the discus, senior
Liza Lap owns the league's fourth-best toss of 44.24m/145-2.
Senior
Scott Boon is entered in the decathlon, having won gold at the SLC championship in the multi-event in both 2021 and 2022 with a second-place finish to his name in 2019. Boon owns the school record in the decathlon with 7,062 points, set at the 2021 SLC Championships. This will mark his first decathlon of the year.
The championships begin on Thursday, May 9, with the 100 meter dash of the decathlon at 12:00 p.m.
