BSB: Huskies Fall to New Orleans in Series Opener

Privateers pull away to run-rule HCU in game one at Husky Field

Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies fall to the Privateers in the series opener at Husky Field. After a two-run game through three innings, New Orleans pulled away to run-rule the Huskies, 15-4, in seven innings.

After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, Trevor Roper got the Huskies on the board scoring on a sacrifice fly by Samuel Benjamin after reaching on a lead-off single to right field. The Privateers increased their lead to 4-1 after adding a run in the top of the second inning and in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the third inning, Benjamin drew a seven-pitch walk before advancing to second on a Tyler LaRue single to right field. After a wild pitch led Benjamin to third base, he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ty Hodge to get HCU within two runs at 4-2. The Huskies gave up two runs in the top of the fourth inning before scoring two of their own in the bottom of the inning when Luke Bard scored on a Roper single to left field after hitting a double to right center. HCU got back within two runs when Josh Prinner scored when Dylan LaRue grounded into a double play to end the inning and record the Huskies final run of the game. The Privateers tallied three runs in the top of the fifth inning and six runs in the top of the seventh inning to close out game one, 15-4.

The Huskies (9-20, 2-5 SLC) were led by Roper going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Baker went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Luke Bard went 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Baylor Baumann (0-2) was tagged with the loss pitching 1.2 innings to start the game allowing three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Five pitchers were used in game one for the Huskies combining for six total strikeouts.

New Orleans (18-11, 6-1 SLC) was led by Alexander Saunier going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and a run. Miguel Useche went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run while Issac Williams went 2-for-4 with a homer, a triple, three RBIs and three runs. All nine batters for the Privateers recorded hits and six of UNO's lineup tallied a multi-hit game. Colton Mercer (4-3) earned the win pitching six innings to start the game allowing four runs, one earned run, on seven hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Trey Usey pitched the final inning of the game allowing one hit.

The three-game conference series against New Orleans will continue with game two on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Husky Field. The series will conclude with game three on Sunday at 2 p.m. Live stats are available at HCUHuskies.com!
