BSB: Huskies Drop Series Opener at NSU

HCU couldn't recover from early deficit falling game-one, 11-5, at Brown-Stroud Field

Box Score NATICHOCHES, Louisiana – The Huskies continued their road stand dropping the series opener to Northwestern State, 5-11, at Brown-Stroud Field. HCU allowed seven runs in the first two innings and couldn't recover to fall game one of the three-game series.

After allowing three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Lane Sparks drew a two-out walk before Trent Baker walked on four-straight pitches. The Huskies got on the board when Trevor Roper doubled to right center scoring Sparks before Baker scored on an error by the cutoff to get HCU within a run at 2-3. The Demons tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third inning before increasing their lead to six runs posting a run in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 8-2. After a lead-off single by Roper to start the top of the fifth inning, Samuel Benjamin hit a two-run homer to get the Huskies within four runs at 4-8. The Demons responded adding three runs in the bottom half of the frame to grab an 11-4 lead. A one-out solo shot by Luke Bard in the top of the sixth inning notched the last run of the game and sealed the loss for the Huskies in the series opener.

The Huskies (15-26, 6-10 SLC) were led by Roper going 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run. Benjamin is now 6-for-11 (.545 avg.) in his last three starts going 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk while Bard hit a solo shot. Roper extends his hitting streak to five straight game going 1-for-4 with a run and walk. Parker Edwards (4-4) was tagged with his first loss in five starts pitching 1.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Baylor Baumann relieved Edwards for 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs on two hits with five walks. Jett Feltman pitched the final four frames allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Northwestern State (16-26, 7-9 SLC) were led by Bo Willis going 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs. Rocco Gump went 2-for-4 scoring two runs while Balin Valentine went 1-for-3 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs. Chase Prestwich (4-4) earned the win for the Demons tossing 5.1 innings to start the game, allowing five runs, four earned runs, on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Alejandro Marquez notched the save pitching the final 3.2 shutout innings with three strikeouts.

The Huskies will continue the three-game series against NSU on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for game-two at 2 p.m. at Brown-Stroud Field.
