SB: Huskies head across town for a Space City showdown with Cougars on Tuesday

Four-game week starts at UH; three-game series at UIW in Alamo City this weekend

HCU (15-15) at HOUSTON (21-14) Houston Christian University returns to the diamond with a mid-week clash across town against the University of Houston. The Huskies and Cougars will play each other for the third straight year at Cougar Softball Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm.

HCU is coming off a Easter weekend series that saw them lose two of three to rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The two teams traded shutouts on Thursday before the Islanders rallied in the seventh inning of the Good Friday rubber game to sneak out of Houston with the series.

For the second straight conference series, Ronni Grofman won the second game of the doubleheader in impressive fashion. After the Huskies got blanked 7-0 on two hits in the opener, Grofman returned the favor, limiting the visiting bats to just five hits as HCU won 3-0. The Huskies put up three runs in the fourth inning on RBI doubles from Maddy Bailey and Jackie Jessup and an RBI single from Tabitha Burnett. Grofman evened her mark at 5-5 on the season, walking two and fanning six.

Jasie Roberts remains atop the stats page on the offensive side. She is batting .360 on the season with three homers and 16 RBI, which leads the team. Her solo homer against SLU in the second game of the doubleheader also gave her the 100th RBI of her career, becoming just the ninth player in school history to reach that plateau.

The senior catcher from Deer Park needs to play just 10 more games to become the eighth player in school history to hit 200 games played. She is just 11 hits away from seventh place all-time, and needs 37 at-bats to hit second all-time.

Haylie Savage continues to battle for the team lead in RBI with Roberts, trailing by just two while leading the club in doubles. AB Garcia had two stolen bases in the TAMUCC series, giving her 33 for her career, which ties her with Shanna Martin for sixth place all-time. She leads the team with eight multi-hit games while her 11-game hitting streak was snapped in the series finale with the Islanders on Friday.

Ronni Grofman's gem on Friday was her fifth win of the season, giving her the team lead in victories, with Lyndie Swanson and Katy Janes just behind at four apiece. Grofman continues to lead the team in ERA at 2.36 and has 46 K's in 59.1 innings. Her final K against SLU the previous Friday was the 100th of her career.

Swanson made two appearances over the weekend versus TAMUCC, moving her into second place all-time. She needs just nine to become the all-time leader for the Huskies. The Katy right-hander has also moved up to seventh place in innings pitched all-time.

HCU and UH have met 10 times overall with the Cougars holding an 8-2 lead in the series. The two teams are meeting for the third straight season, and have split the last two match-ups. UH won last year 4-1 following a 7-0 victory by the Huskies in 2022.

The Cougars are 21-14 overall and boast seven players batting .323 or better as well as four players with six or more dingers. Shelby Smith leads the team with a .397 batting average and Kennedy Thomas is just behind her with a .396 average and team high 11 stolen bases.

Bree Cantu leads the team with 40 RBI and is tied with Turiya Coleman and Jazmyn Rollin with seven homers each. Coleman bats .357 and is second on the team with 35 RBI. The Cougars are averaging 7.5 runs per contest.

Not only does Smith lead the team in batting, but she is also the top hurler. She is currently 10-5 on the season with a team-high 92 innings pitched, although with a 4.64 ERA.

Following the game at Houston, the Huskies will travel to the Alamo City for a three-game Southland series with Incarnate Word on Friday and Saturday.
