MGOLF: Huskies Finish 8th & 15th at 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational

Ben Caton and Brooks Pawlak led the Huskies finishing under par for the week at Sweetwater Country Club

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Huskies A team finished in 8th place after posting a final round six-over par, 294, at Sweetwater Country Club. The A team tallied rounds of 281-287-294 for a 862, two-under par total.  HCU finished third in birdies made of the 16-team field totaling 56 birdies for the tournament.

The Huskies are led by Brooks Pawlak and Ben Caton, both finishing in a tie for 21st place at one-under par for the week. After carding rounds of 69-70 on opening day, Pawlak recorded a final round four-over par, 76, including four birdies on the day. The freshman started with a bogey at the par-4, 5th hole, before bouncing back with a birdie at the par-5, 6th hole. After a double-bogey at the 9th and 12th holes, the Kingwood native carded back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes. Pawlak went one-under par on his last four-holes including knocking in a birdie at the par-5, 2nd hole. Pawlak led the Huskies with 14 total birdies on the week including 10 birdies on day one.

Ben Caton posted the lowest final round for the Huskies with a one-under par, 71. After firing back-to-back rounds of even-par, 72, the senior opened the third round with nine straight pars before rolling in a birdie at the par-5, 15th hole. The Scotland native posted a two-under par back nine knocking in a birdie at the par-4, 18th hole. After a double-bogey at the 1st hole, Caton answered with a birdie at the par-5, 2nd hole, to finish the week in the red at one-under par. Caton led the Huskies with 37 total pars on the week and tallied 10 total birdies for the tournament.

Roy Barrera got off to a fast start on day two making a birdie on his second hole, the par-4, 8th hole. After three minor blemishes over the next six holes, the sophomore knocked in a birdie at the par-5, 15th hole. A birdie on his final hole, the par-5, 6th hole, carded Barrera a one-over par, 73, in the final round finishing in a tie for 35th place at one-over par. The Boerne native finished the tournament second on the team in both par-4 scoring average with a 4.07 average, and total birdies made with 11 total birdies for the week.

After posting rounds of 73-72 on the 36-hole day one, Cooper New carded a final round two-over par, 74, to finish in a tie for 40th place. Starting on the 8th hole, the senior got off to a steady start to the final round paring his first three holes before rolling in a birdie at the par-5, 11th hole. After 10 pars in a row, the Comfort native was one-under par on his first 14 holes. A trio of bogeys at the 4th through the 6th holes to finish the tournament posted New at four-over par for the week.

Rounding out the Huskies A team lineup, Mason Napier carded a final round four-over par, 76, to conclude the week in a tie for 50th place at six-over par. After an opening round three-under par, 69, the sophomore shot a five-over par, 77, in round two. The Paris, Tx native added two birdies in the final round at the par-5, 11th hole, and the par-4, 3rd hole, to finish tied for second on the team with 11 total birdies for the tournament.

The Huskies B team finished in 15th place at 63-over par following rounds of 312-306-309. The B team was led by Benjamin Dabos carding a final round even-par, 72, after rounds of 78-77 on day one. The freshman recorded seven total birdies for the week including five birdies in the final round. The Argentina native got under par early birdieing his opening hole, the par-5, 15th hole. After a blemish at the 18th hole, Dabos made three straight birdies at the 1st through the 3rd hole to get to three-under par on the round through seven holes. After two bogeys and a double-bogey to round out the front nine, Dabos finished the day adding another birdie at the par-4, 11th hole. Dabos finished the tournament in a tie for 67th place at 11-over par for the week.

After carding rounds of 74-75 on day one, Haven McEntire posted a 10-over par, 82, in the final round to finish in 75th place. The junior added a lone birdie at the par-5, 11th hole, in the final round to conclude the tournament with 10 total birdies on the week.

A tough start to the week with a nine-over par, 81, in the opening round; Shaheen Momin bounced back with back-to-back rounds in the seventies. A three-over par, 75, in round two followed by a five-over par, 77, in the final round posted the junior in 78th place for the tournament. Making two birdies in each round, the Sugar Land native rolled in birdies at the 11th and 15th holes in the third round to finish with six birdies for the week.

Rounding out the B team lineup in his final home tournament of his Husky career, Oliver Dickman recorded rounds of 79-79-78 to finish in 80th place for the tournament. The senior made five total birdies for the week including two in the final round at the par-4, 1st hole, and the par-3, 7th hole. The England native carded 31 total pars for the week and finished at 20-over par total.

New Mexico Junior College went wire-to-wire to capture the 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational. The Thunderbirds posted rounds of 274-282-291 to finish at 17-under par total for the week. Missouri State and Weber State claimed a tie for 2nd place at 16-under par, one-shot back. Playing as an individual, University of Houston's Jacob Borow claimed the individual honor firing rounds of 66-65-69 to finish at 16-under par for the tournament. Tarleton State's Max Bengtsson finished 2nd place at 12-under par, four-strokes back. UNO's Kyle Bennett and SLU's Grayson Glorioso claimed a tie for third at nine-under par for the week.

The Huskies will return to action at The Big Texan hosted by UTRGV at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas on Monday and Tuesday, March 25th & 26th.
