MGOLF: Huskies Sit in 7th & 15th Place Thru 36-Holes of HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational

HCU's A team fires back-to-back under par rounds; Pawlak in a tie for 11th place at five-under par

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Huskies A team posted back-to-back under-par rounds,281-287, to open the 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational and sit in 7th place through 36-holes at Sweetwater Country Club. HCU's B team are in 15th place following rounds of 312-306 with one round to go in the 54-hole home tournament.

The Huskies are led by Brooks Pawlak carding rounds of three-under par, 69, and two-under par, 70, on opening day. After starting with a bogey at the par-4, 3rd hole, the freshman added another blemish at the 7th hole before rolling in a birdie at the par-4, 8th hole. The Kingwood native found his rhythm making a trio of birdies at the 12th through 14th holes and another at the par-3, 16th hole, to get to three-under par. A bogey at the 17th hole followed by a birdie at the par4, 1st hole, Pawlak posted an opening round three-under par. After a bogey at the 4th hole starting his second round followed by six straight pars, Pawlak knocked in a birdie at the par-5, 11th hole, to get back to even par for the round. A birdie at 15th hole and another at the 17th hole, got Pawlak to two-under par for the round and five-under par for the tournament. A bogey at the 18th hole countered with a birdie at the 2nd hole to finish the day, Pawlak is tie for 11th place at five-under par heading into the final round.

Ben Caton and Roy Barrera are currently tied for 29th place at even-par. Caton fired back-to-back rounds of even-par, 72, on day one. The senior started his day at the 1st hole and got off to a fast start with back-to-back birdies at the 2nd and 3rd holes. Four bogeys over the next eight holes before rolling in back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes got Caton back to even-par. In his second round, the Scotland native started with a birdie at the par-4, 1st hole, before a double-bogey at the 2nd hole. Eight straight pars before a birdie at the 11th hole and another at the 15th hole got Caton under-par. A bogey at the 17th hole to finish the 36-hole opening day, Caton sits at even-par.

Also starting at the 1st hole, Roy Barrera got it going early rolling in a trio of birdies at the 2nd through the 4th hole to get to three under-par quickly. The sophomore was tied for the lead through eight holes after knocking in a birdie at the par-4, 8th hole, to get to four-under par. A bogey at the 9th hole followed by a birdie at the par-4, 10th hole, got Barrera back to four-under par. Three bogeys down the stretch of the opening round posted Barrera a one-under par, 71, in the opening round. Reminiscing of his opening round, the Boerne native recorded back-to-back birdies at the 1st and 2nd holes to start the second round. Four bogeys from the 7th through the 12th holes got Barrera into white figures at one-over par. A birdie at the par-5, 15th hole, carded Barrera a one-over par, 73, in the second round to finish even-par for the day.

Cooper New, starting at the 2nd hole, also got into red figures fast after back-to-back birdies to open the round at the 2nd and 3rd holes. A minor blemish at the 8th hole followed by a double-bogey at the 10th hole got New to one-over par. A birdie at the par-4, 12th hole, and another birdie at the par-5, 15th hole, got the senior back to one under-par. Two bogeys down the stretch posted New a one-over par, 73, in the first round. Birdieing his opening hole for the second time, the Comfort native got back to even par for the tournament. A double-bogey at the 5th hole and bogeys at the 7th and 9th holes put New at four-over par for the day. Back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th holes before adding another birdie at the par-5, 15th hole, New recorded a second round even-par, 72, to finish the day at one-over par in a tie for 36th place.

Rounding out the Husky' A team lineup, Mason Napier tied the team lead after the opening round with a three-under par, 69. Napier bogeyed his opening hole, the par-3, 4th hole, before bouncing back with a birdie at the par-5, 6th hole. Another bogey at the 8th hole followed by a birdie at the 9th hole, the sophomore headed to the front nine at even-par. Finding his rhythm, Napier recorded back-to-back birdies at the 12th and 13th holes and rolled in another birdie at the par5, 15th hole, to go three-under par in a four-hole stretch. Back-to-back bogeys at the 16th and 17th hole followed by a back-to-back birdies at the 1st and 2nd holes, Napier posted a three-under par opening round. After carding seven birdies in round one, the Paris, Tx native added two birdies in the second round en route to a five-over par, 77, in round two to sit in a tie for 48th place at two-over par total.

HCU's B team is currently in 15th place after rounds of 312 and 306. The B team is led by Haven McEntire carding rounds of two-over par, 74, and three-over par, 75. The junior bogeyed his opening hole, the par-3, 16th hole, before bouncing back with a birdie at the 17th hole. The Georgetown native got under par after rolling in a birdie at the par-5, 2nd hole, before falling back to even-par with a bogey at the 4th hole. A birdie at the 5th hole followed by a double-bogey and a bogey at the 6th and 7th holes got McEntire to two-over par. A bogey at the 11th hole before ending the opening round with a birdie at the 14th hole, McEntire posted a two-over par, 74, in round one. McEntire knocked in five birdies in the second round at the 17th, 2nd, 6th and 7th, and 15th holes to fire a three-over par, 75, and sit in a tie for 60th place at five-over par heading into day two.

Benjamin Dabos carded two birdies on opening day en route to rounds of six-over par, 78, and five-over par, 77, to sit in a tie for 74th place at 11-over par. After posting an opening round nine-over par, 81, including two birdies at the 8th and 15th hole, Shaheen Momin rebounded with a three-over par, 75, in round two. The junior added two birdies in the second round at the par-5, 2nd hole, and the par-5, 15th hole, to sit in a tie for 76th place at 12-over par.

Oliver Dickman rounds out the Husky B team lineup with back-to-back rounds of seven-over par, 79. The senior tallied three birdies on day one rolling in a lone birdie in the opening round at the par-4, 10th hole, before holing two birdies in round two at the 8th and 10th holes. The England native sits in 80th place at 14-over par heading into the final day.

New Mexico Junior College leads the way through 36-holes following rounds of 274-282 for a 20-under par total. SLU is three-shots back at 17-under par and UIW sits in 3rd place at 13-under par, seven-shots back. University of Houston's Jacob Borrow, playing as an individual, holds the individual lead posting rounds of 66-65 for a 13-under par total. Borrow is two-shots clear of SLU's Griffin Dorr at 11-under par and five-strokes ahead of UNO's Kyle Bennett, TSU's Kci Lindskog, and SLU's Grayson Glorioso, all at eight-under par.

The Huskies will conclude the 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational playing the final round on Tuesday starting at 8 a.m. HCU will play alongside UNO, Tarleton State, Missouri State, Nicholls, Omaha, and Houston.
