SB: Huskies host rival Islanders in three-game SLC series

Series will have Thursday doubleheader and Good Friday finale due to Easter

HCU (14-13, 1-5 SLC) vs. TAMUCC (17-10, 5-4 SLC)
Houston Christian University returns to action on Thursday with a Southland Conference series against rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Husky Field. The two teams will play the twi-night doubleheader on Thursday with the series finale coming on Good Friday at noon, just ahead of the Easter weekend.

HCU enters the week at 14-13 overall and 1-5 in the league after last weekend's solid showing on the road at SLC front-runner Southeastern Louisiana.

The Huskies dropped the opener of the Friday twin-bill 9-1, but rebounded for a 3-2 victory in the back-end of the pair, a win that knocked the Lions out of first place in the standings. Ronni Grofman went the distance, scattering eight hits and fanning six while allowing just a two-run inside-the-park homer in the seventh. SLU would claim the series with a 4-0 win on Saturday.

Jasie Roberts remains atop the stats page on the offensive side, climbing leaderboards with each passing contest. She moved into the Top 10 in at-bats and hits against Penn, and has now added RBI and doubles charts to her impressive career tote-board. Her solo homer against SLU in the second game of the doubleheader also gave her the 100th RBI of her career, becoming just the ninth player in school history to reach that plateau.

The senior catcher from Deer Park is slashing .377 / .623 / .442 with a 1.065 OPS, tops on the club. She leads the team with 29 hits and 16 RBI, and is second in runs scored, doubles and home runs. She is eighth in the conference in batting average and sixth in OPS.

Haylie Savage continues to battle for the team lead in RBI with Roberts, trailing by just two while leading the club in doubles and RBI. She is currently batting .295, is third in hits and has scored 24 runs, tops on the team. She ranks 10th in the league in slugging percentage, sixth in runs scored, fifth in doubles and seventh in homers.

Continuing her recent solid stretch in the batter's box, AB Garcia has upped her average to .307 over the last nine games. She is 12-29 (.414) over that span, including a 4-10 weekend in Hammond. She stole another base against Baylor in the mid-week, giving her eight on the season and 31 for her career, tying her with Tammie Davis for seventh on the all-time charts. She leads the club with eight multi-hit games and brings a nine-game hitting streak into the series with TAMUCC.

Ronni Grofman's gem on Friday was her fourth win of the season, tying the senior trio up in victories, as Lyndie Swanson and Katy Janes also have four dubs this season. Grofman continues to lead the team in ERA at 2.71 and has 40 K's in 51.2 innings. Her final K against SLU on Friday was the 100th of her career.

Swanson made two appearances over the weekend at SLU, and three more outings will move her into second place all-time. The Katy right-hander has also moved up to eighth place in innings pitched all-time, and needs just nine to take over seventh place.

HCU and TAMUCC have met 47 times, with the Islanders holding a 27-20 lead in the all-time series. The Huskies however, lead the series 16-14 since joining the Southland.

Over that span, the Huskies are 10-7 in Corpus Christi, while the Islanders are 7-4 in Houston. HCU took the only two neutral site meetings, winning twice in the 2022 Southland Conference Tournament in Hammond to eliminate the Islanders.

The Huskies took two of three meetings in Corpus Christi last season, sweeping the Friday twin-bill 1-0 and 4-3 before dropping the St. Patrick's Day finale 5-4. Katy Janes spun her first career no-hitter and 32nd in HCU history in the 1-0 victory in the first game of the series.

Corpus, 17-10 overall and 5-4 in the Southland, is paced in the batter's box by Taniece Tyson who leads the team in average (.378) and homers (six) while second in RBI (16). Alina Jasso bats .342 with 11 RBI and is a team-best 8-8 in stolen bases. Kimane Rogron leads the squad with 17 RBI.

The Islanders boast the 2023 Southland Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year, Primrose Aholelei. The senior from Honolulu, Hawai'I is currently 11-5 on the season with a 2.43 ERA and four shutouts. She has struck out 126 in 101 innings pitched thus far in 2024.

Following the series with Corpus Christi, HCU will have four games next week, starting with a Tuesday night tilt across town at University of Houston before a road trip to the Alamo City for a three-game weekend series at Incarnate Word.
