MGOLF: Huskies Finish 12th Place at The Big Texan

Caton claims best finish of his Husky career in a tie for 5th place at three-under par

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Huskies concluded the 2024 The Big Texan at Riverhill Country Club finishing in 12th place with rounds of 297, 305, and 289 to finish at 24-over par for the tournament. The one-over par, 289, in the final round is the best final round for the Husky program this championship season.

Ben Caton led the Huskies claiming his best finish to-date as a Husky with a tie for 5th place at three-under par. After posting back-to-back under par rounds on opening day, 70-71, the Scotland native fired an even-par round of 72 to finish at three-under par and tally back-to-back tournaments with under-par finishes. Starting the day four-shots back of the leader in a tie for 2nd place, Caton carded a bogey on his opening hole, the par-4, 10th hole, before four straight pars followed by a birdie at the par-4, 15th hole, to get back to even-par. A bogey at the 16th hole before making the turn at even-par thanks to a birdie at the par-4, 18th hole, Caton was five-shots off the lead heading into the final nine holes. After a bogey at the 1st hole, Caton rallied seven straight pars before a birdie at the last hole, the par-4 9th hole, to finish eight-shots back of the leader. The senior claimed his second top-10 and first top-5 of his five-year Husky career which includes three straight top-20 finishes this spring.

After a tough start on opening day with rounds of 76-78 to sit in a tie for 60th place, Brooks Pawlak battled back with his eighth under par round of his freshman campaign. A final round one-under par, 71, catapulted the Kingwood native 15-spots up the leaderboard to a tie for 45th place. Pawlak opened the final round with a birdie at the par-4, 10th hole, before getting to two-under par after a birdie at the par-5, 14th hole. A double-bogey at the 15th hole followed by 10 straight pars before closing out with a birdie at the par-4, 8th hole, Pawlak completed the tournament at nine-over par for the week.

Cooper New followed up rounds of 73-75 on day one with a five-over par, 77, in the final round to also finish in a tie for 45th place. The senior added two birdies on day two tallying back-to-back birdies at the 4th and 5th holes to finish with five birdies for the week. The Comfort native finished tied for 5th place in total pars for the week with 37 pars.

Mason Napier led the Huskies and finished tied for 7th place with the most birdies for the week, 12 birdies, after adding six birdies in the final round. Thanks to a one-under par, 71, on the final day, the sophomore jumped 13-spots up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 56th place with rounds of 78-78-71. The Paris native recorded three birdies on each nine holes in the final round to finish the tournament at 11-over par for the week.

Rounding out the Husky lineup, Roy Barrera bounced back on day two with a final round three-over par, 75, after rounds of 81-80 on day one. The sophomore added three birdies in the final round at the 5th, 9th and 15th holes to finish the week in a tie for 78th place at 20-over par.

Competing as an individual, Benjamin Dabos claimed his second best finish of his freshman season in a tie for 39th place. After rounds of 74-78 on opening day, the Argentina native tied his lowest round of the year with an even-par, 72, to finish at eight-over par for the week. After just three birdies on day one, Dabos recorded four birdies in the final round starting with back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes before rolling in another birdie at the par-4, 18th hole, to make the turn at one-under par. Dabos knocked in another birdie at the 4th hole en route to back-to-back 72's in the final round of the last two tournaments.

Host, UTRGV, went wire-to-wire to claim the 2024 The Big Texan with rounds of 285-292-277 to finish the week at 10-under par as a team. Abilene Christian posted a final round 15-under par, 273, to claim second place at one-over par, 11-shots back. UTRGV's Javier Neira came from behind to claim the individual title with a final round eight-under par, 64, after carding rounds of 69-72 on opening day. Seton Hall's Wenliang Xie and day one leader, Tarleton State's Alvaro Huidobro, captured a tie for second place at seven-under par, four-strokes back.

The Huskies will return to action for their final non-conference tournament of the season at the 2024 Koasati Pines Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls at Koasati Pines Golf Club in Kinder, Louisiana on April 8th – 9th.
