Box Score COLLEGE STATION, Texas – HCU put up three runs in their final trip to the plate on Tuesday and had the tying run on deck, but it's late rally fell short, as the Huskies dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 4 Texas A&M at Blue Bell Park on Tuesday evening.
Facing two top-five pitching staffs in Division 1 over the past five days, the Huskies got good work out of their bullpen, with tossed four scoreless frames against the Aggies. After beginning the game with two scoreless innings and four K's,
Ethan Coronel issued a pair of walks to start the third and one run would score after he was relieved by
Jett Feltman to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies would tag on another run in the fourth, followed by a pair of runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 6-0 lead into the ninth. The Huskies then began to rally, as a lead-off walk was drawn by
Tyler LaRue before
Dylan LaRue was hit on his fourth pitch of his at-bat to put runners on first and second base. With one out, pinch-hitter
Josh Prinner then worked a walk on eight pitches to load the bases. The Aggies went to the bullpen which immediately issued another free pass, this one to
Ty Hodge that got the Huskies on the board for the first time.
Trent Baker then lifted a sacrifice fly to score a second run, and Prinner would later score on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half. With Hodge in scoring position and the tying run on-deck,
Samuel Benjamin popped up to the short, allowing the Aggies to hold on for the victory.
The Huskies (7-17) were led by
Katcher Halligan recorded his third multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-4.
Trent Baker went 1-for-2 with an RBI while
Tyler LaRue and Prinner each tallied a walk and a run.
Ethan Coronel (0-2) was tagged with the loss pitching two innings allowing one earned run on two hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Nine Husky pitchers held the Aggies to just six hits with six strikeouts and 11 walks on the night.
Texas A&M (22-3) was led by Hayden Schott going 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run. Ali Camarillo went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Jace LaViolette went 1-for-3 with a run and two walks. Chris Cortez (3-1) earned the win pitching .1 shutout innings of relief. Luke Jackson started the game for the Aggies pitching 2.2 shutout innings giving up one hit with two strikeouts. Seven Aggie pitchers saw action against the Huskies recording 10 total strikeouts to just four walks.
The Huskies will get back to Southland Conference action this weekend, traveling to Hammond, Louisiana for a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday through Saturday at Alumni Field.
HCU is 8-18 against the Lions since 2014 with the last win on Pat Kenelly Diamond coming in 2021 as the Huskies took a double-header, 3-1 and 4-3.
Southeastern Louisiana (17-8, 2-1 SLC) opened the conference schedule winning two of three against Northwestern State last weekend. The Lions are led by Shea Thomas who has a.374 average on the season with five homers and 22 RBI. TJ Salvaggio has recorded multi-hits in five straight games including going 6-for-13 (.461 avg.) against the Demons with a triple, three runs and three RBI for the series.
